John Carroll Splits with Muskingum in OAC Home Opener

John Carroll Fights Back to Split with Muskingum

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS -- A 9-game homestand continued for John Carroll Baseball on Saturday with solid results.

In the first home conference games of the season at Schweickert Field, JCU split with Muskingum University, which has received votes in the D3baseball.com polls.

John Carroll fell in the first game, 15-10, before rebounding with a bigtime win in the second contest, 4-3.

Game 1
Muskingum lit up the scoreboard to begin the ballgame. Sam Palmieri got the scoring going with an RBI double to left center, immediately followed by an RBI single from Lex Castaneda. JCU quickly responded, after George Haracz laced a triple down the right field line, Connor Mayle beat out an infield single to bring the second baseman home.

The Muskies bat stayed hot as Conner Thama smashed a two run homer to dead center. After a walk, Tobie Teke doubled to left to bring in another run. John Carroll stranded two runners in the home half, to trail 5-1. That deficit would grow to five after another Muskingum homer, this one from Benny Hess.

John Carroll would show their first sign of life in the fifth inning when Erik Daugenti put a single past the shortstop to score Glossa and Mayle. Keeping the momentum in the next inning, they would take the lead courtesy of a pair of walks with the bases loaded from Sean Connolly and Daugenti and a single from Glossa to make it a 8-6 game.

In the next frame, Muskingum fought back with a home run from Weston Melic. Muskingum would keep their offensive efforts in the top of 7th with six more runs to make it a 13-8 game. Despite being down, John Carroll continued to claw at the lead. George Haracz would score Harmon on a bunt and Glossa would bring home a run with a double, making it a 13-10 game.

Entering the eighth inning Muskingum continued to fire on the offensive side of the bat. Taking advantage of a pair of errors, Tobie Teke singled to left to score a run and Sam Palmieri grounded into a fielder's choice to get a pair of runs to expand the lead to five.

After the offensive efforts in the top of the eighth, they quieted down for the rest of the game where Muskingum would take game one by a score of 15-10. Every starter found the hit column and seven of the nine would get at least one RBI. Jake Roshau would get credit with the win for Muskingum and Kiayuan Baskerville took the hit on the loss for JCU.

Game 2
The top of the first started with some moves on both offense and defense. With runners on first and second, Patrick Sherman was able to catch a runner stealing by throwing out Teke at second. The next pitch, Palmieri found the left field to break the score with a 1-0 lead for the Fighting Muskies.

In the bottom of the frame, the Blue Streaks made an effort to tie the game at one, but Haracz was thrown out at home by a good throw from Aiden Reis in right field.

After a quick inning by Corll, the Blue Streaks loaded up the bases with one out in the bottom of the second, but Schultz was able to get a strikeout and a groundout to keep it at zero for JCU.

Muskingum responded with an offensive effort of their own in the top of the third after a lead off triple by Grant Meller, but Corll was able to keep him stranded after a strikeout and a pair of short flyouts.

John Carroll would get another opportunity on Schultz in the bottom of the 4th. With runners on second and third, Haracz would find the right center gap to score Harmon and Persichetti and make it a 2-1 Blue Streak lead. After a sacrifice bunt, a walk, and a big stolen base by Glossa, Daugenti hit a ground rule double in center field scoring two making it a 4-1 game.

John Carroll would get another opportunity when the seniors Sean Connolly and Carson Balfour would hit back to back singles. With runners on the corners, Max Vosters was able to shut down the Blue Streaks and keep the game at 4-1 through five.

In his last inning, Corll would find himself in a jam with the bases loaded and one out. After a sacrifice fly by Reis, Corll would strike out his fourth batter on pitch 119 to quiet Muskingum and finish a strong six inning campaign.

Down two, Muskingum continued to fight. In the top of the 8th, Joey Eurez pinch ran for the DH and stole second. With a single by Aiden Reis, Eurez was able to score and make it a one ball game.

Despite the comeback, Sean Connolly moved from the outfield to the pitcher's mound, and recorded a three inning save in the 4-3 win. The highlight was the ninth inning where the senior was able to get three infield flies.

With the split, John Carroll moves 13-7 and 3-1 in OAC play. The win was thanks to a strong effort by George Haracz, who went 6-8 with three walks in both games starting at second base
