Blue Streaks Walkoff Aurora in Satisfying Win

Erik Daugenti scored the game-tying run in the eighth and hit an RBI single for the game-winner

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Aurora has had John Carroll's number in the last couple of years, but not today.

The Spartans swept the Blue Streaks in the 2023 NCAA Regional and dealt JCU two losses last year in Florida. On Wednesday afternoon, John Carroll Baseball secured some semblance of revenge.

The Blue Streaks walked off Aurora at Winter Haven's Chain of Lakes Park in a 7-6 conquest. John Carroll is now 4-1 on the young season.

The scoring started early, as Ethan Glossa doubled to score a pair of runs in the first. The Spartans responded in kind, though, stealing back the lead with a 3-run double in the second game. A George Haracz RBI single in the bottom of the frame emphasized the point that this would be a seesaw game.

Indeed, the fun continued in the third inning. After Aurora retook the lead with an RBI double, John Carroll fired up a rally. Sean Fritinger dashed home on a wild pitch and Jack Harmon belted an RBI single for a narrow 5-4 advantage.

Sean Connolly took over for Roger Simon and settled things down with three frames of scoreless relief. The Spartans' slumber ended in the seventh with a solo homer over the wall in center. Aurora chased Connolly in the eighth with back-to-back one out singles. A passed ball ultimately allowed an unearned run to score, though CJ Desmond stranded two runners by getting an inning-ending groundout.

Hitting in the unfamiliar #6 spot in the lineup, Erik Daugenti battered the Spartans not once, but twice. Leading off in the eight, the Saint Ignatius product came around to score on a Haracz single, tying the game at six apiece. After a 1-2-3 Desmond ninth, JCU got a chance at glory in the bottom of the frame. An Aurora error got Glossa aboard with 1 out. After he stole second, Glossa dashed to third on a Patrick Sherman single. So, with two outs, Daugenti promptly slapped a single to score Glossa and earn a 7-6 walkoff win.

Daugenti finished with a 2-for-4 day with 2 runs and an RBI. Jack Harmon excelled with a perfect 3-for-3 afternoon with a run and RBI. Haracz also must receive his due, hitting 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs.

Desmond got the win in his first appearance in the Blue & Gold, finishing with one and two-thirds scoreless innings.
