Women's Lacrosse Downs Polar Bears for First 14-0 Start in Program History

The Blue Streaks took control with a 7-goal second quarter

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – History was made on Friday afternoon for John Carroll Women's Lacrosse.

For the first time in program history, the Blue Streaks have won 14 games to start the season. In doing so, John Carroll also clinched at least a share of the 2025 Ohio Athletic Conference Championship.

"One of the first things I remind them of at the end of the game was that it's really cool because it was years in the making," said Head Coach Kelsey Shewbridge. "We haven't done this without the building of the program history for the past 10 years. It's really cool that we have been able to grow back to the spot this year. That starts with culture and that starts with a relationship-driven foundation. I think the girls have really bought in to that and they truly enjoy each other on and off the field. That has been a big part in our success, but today we got to go out there and have a fun game with each other. Also, we hold each other to a higher standard of competing at the highest level we can. That's why we earned the 14-0."

Anna Spitzer started the scoring within the first minute, getting JCU on the board. Ohio Northern stood unfazed, firing up a 4-1 run. Olivia Hanulak scored in the final minute to take the edge off, but ONU still took a 4-3 lead into the second quarter.

John Carroll peppered ONU with shots to start the second quarter, but it took until the seventh for the Polar Bear netminder to crack. Vivian Rung broke the ice on a nice right-to-left move off a Spitzer pass. Kate Balland then fired one home quickly after. ONU stopped the bleeding, but not for long.

On the ensuing draw control, Riley Knapp battled hard for the DC, picked it up deep in enemy territory and scored on a pretty play. A bit later, Hanulak fired one home, leading to an ONU timeout with the hosts leading, 7-5.

The break slowed down JCU's scoring, but not for long. Kathleen Cagney found twine to push the lead to three. While ONU ended the jaunt, Abby Cassidy went on a run of her own. The first year knocked in two goals, setting the score at 10-6 JCU at half.

"It was awesome. It's fun to remind them that they need to come out hot with energy every time they step on the field," said Shewbridge. "All about constantly reminding them, whether it is on the field or off the field that we have to come out hot and have supportive energy. That's the consistency across the field with some bumps along the way and having to constantly remind them to be ready to rock'n roll.

Out of halftime, John Carroll roared for a pair of goals to take full control. Cassidy and Spitzer provided the offense, leading to a Polar Bear timeout at the 12:24 mark of the quarter. Kathleen Cagney then thundered home a goal before lightning struck with 10:48 left in the third quarter, leading to a delay with JCU ahead, 13-6.

Just 25 seconds into the restart, Lauren Schwartz found twine off a pass from Cagney. Godleski provided a goal a couple minutes later. For the next eight minutes, the teams experience a scoring dryspell until Hanulak broke through with a tally off a Krom assist, beginning the running clock. Knapp kept the clock running for much of the fourth quarter with some nice goals.

Anna Spitzer topped the team with 5 points (2 goals, 3 assists). Kathleen Cagney and Olivia Hanulak both tallied 3 goals and 1 assist. Abby Cassidy achieved a hat trick plus a team-high 5 groundballs. Riley Knapp also got a hat trick. Meghan Weiner registered a team-best 3 caused turnovers plus 2 groundballs.

Rachel Kroeger got the start in cage and made 2 saves. Josephine Lawler played in the second half and made one save.

"I think the biggest thing for us is to take it one game at a time," said Shewbridge. "We can't think about the playoffs yet. We have to make sure that we are still in regular season play and we have to have a good break over Easter to enjoy and then come back on Monday ready to work. It's important that we have that energy coming back prepared and ready to go and when we step on the field, we compete to make sure that we give our all and we compete at the highest standard and hold each other accountable."

Next Up
John Carroll will now enjoy some time off for Easter break. JCU will complete the regular season with a road matchup at Mount Union on Wednesday at 4 pm. The Blue Streaks will hope to win the conference regular season title outright.
