Women's Tennis Earns a Clutch Victory over Otterbein on the Road

Felicity Kolb clinched the match in a dramatic #3 singles battle

WESTERVILLE – In a hostile environment in an important moment, Felicity Kolb came up in the clutch.

On the road in the regular-season finale with postseason hosting implications on the line, the junior faced a tough foe in a deadlocked 3-3 match, winner take all. In one of the best moments of her collegiate career, Kolb corralled a 3-set victory to earn the win for John Carroll Women's Tennis.

With Kolb's courageous victory, the Blue Streaks emerged with a 4-3 victory and will host the Cardinals for a rematch in the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament Semifinal on Wednesday.

The match began with a surprising result. In past years, Otterbein has always seemed to enjoy an advantage in doubles against John Carroll.

This time, JCU flipped the script, sweeping all three matches to take the doubles point.

Atop the lineup, Maddie Kavenagh and Evelyn Deren combined for a narrow conquest, 7-5. Felicity Kolb and Emma Smith enjoyed the widest margin of victory, in a 6-3 decision at #2 doubles. And finally at #3 doubles, Caroline Chandler and Madi Davila picked up a 6-4 win.

Otterbein enjoyed an advantage atop the singles lineup. Kavenagh dropped a 6-1, 6-3 loss at #1 and Deren lost a 6-2, 6-1 decision at #2 singles. Chandler also experienced a tough defeat at #6 singles, 6-1, 6-3.

The first years came up in the clutch to set up the deciding showdown. Davila won a huge victory at #4 singles, 6-1, 6-2. Smith came up with a similarly heroic win at the #5 spot, 6-2, 6-2.

Kolb lost her first set at #3 singles, 3-6. But the Batavia, Illinois native rebounded well with a 6-3 conquest in the second set. With all eyes on her, and with a loud crowd in support of Otterbein's #3 singles player, Kolb stepped up. In an unreal 6-2 set three conquest, Kolb had fun, enjoying the spotlight. Kolb matured in real time on the court, turning into a vital leader for John Carroll to secure a substantial victory.

With the win, JCU finishes its final run in the OAC with a 4-1 mark. More importantly, John Carroll will be at the Short Family Tennis Center for the OAC Tournament Semifinal.
