Strong Pitching Guides Blue Streaks to Sweep Against Oberlin

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS - On a chilly Sunday afternoon the John Carroll softball team earned a sweep against Oberlin by scores of 1-0 and 2-1 and now the Blue Streaks improve to 8-8 on the year.

The Blue Streaks ended their eight-game losing streak after starting the season off 6-0 and have passed their win total from a year ago.

GAME ONE: JCU - 1, Oberlin - 0 (8 innings)

The first game of the doubleheader was a pitching battle between Danielle Orendi and Hailey Alspach, as Orendi was nearly unhittable, recording 11 strikeouts.

Oberlin broke up the no-hitter in the fourth inning with a bloop single over the head of first baseman Angela Vitantonio. The next batter reached on an error as the Blue Streaks tried to quickly turn a double play.

After a few stolen bases and a walk Oberlin had its best opportunity with the bases loaded. However the Pittsburgh native answered the call and recorded her seventh strikeout.

In the sixth inning, both Oberlin and John Carroll had dangerous chances to get the first run on the scoreboard. Maya Means of Oberlin doubled to right center with two outs, then Olivia Bey almost knocked in the first run, but a great defensive play by Izzy Coode kept the ball in the infield and held the go-ahead run at third base. The next batter would fly out to right field and end the late-game scare.

For John Carroll, Kaylyn Odelli reached first with a single up the middle. The senior would steal second base and get into scoring position, but would be left on base.

Seven innings would not be enough, as the two squads would need extra innings. Orendi had no problem retiring the side in the top of the eighth.

In the bottom half of the inning, Alyssa McPeek reached on an error. Melissa Smith would lay down a perfect sacrifice bunt advancing McPeek to second base. Two batters later with two outs in the inning, Coode singled up the middle and McPeek scored the game winning run.

Game Two: JCU - 2, Oberlin - 1

Wren Norris of Oberlin used her speed in game two by stealing second and third base. When stealing third, Norris was able to score on a throwing error giving Oberlin the 1-0 edge in the first inning.

John Carroll took advantage of Oberlin miscues on passed balls and wild pitches, as one wild pitch resulted in Emily Graves scoring and tied the game at 1-1 in the second inning.

Odelli gave John Carroll the lead in the fourth inning, as the senior turned on an inside pitch and hit her first home run of the year.

Kristin Dems was strong in the circle, recording three strikeouts, allowing four hits in seven innings of work as the Mentor native improves to 3-3 on the year.

John Carroll will have a quick turnaround as Otterbein comes to University Heights tomorrow for a double header with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.
