Baseball Splits with Berg in Tiffin

The Blue Streaks' bats were hot in the opener, not so much in the second game

TIFFIN, Ohio -- In a doubleheader at Heidelberg University, John Carroll Baseball notched a strong 10-2 victory in Game 1 before faltering in Game 2, 10-3.

Now past the halfway point of Ohio Athletic Conference play, the Blue Streaks stand at 6-4, good for a third-place tie in the league standings.

JCU is now 3-1 on the road vs. OAC foes after the second of five roadtrips to place conference opponents.

Game 1
John Carroll set the stage for the victory with a rapid start. A 2-run Ethan Glossa double to right center plus an Erik Daugenti RBI groundout gave the visitors an early 3-0 advantage. For good measure, a George Haracz RBI double in the second frame futher extended the lead.

Roger Simon cruised on the bump. The Loyola Academy silenced the Berg bats for seven innings, scattering just 4 hits. The junior has been absolutely stellar this year, becoming a very reliable starter for manager Bobby Bell.

Justin Pinkowski finished out the last two innings, as the first year allowed one run in two frames in the best outing of his young career.

JCU provided plentiful run support, hanging crooked numbers on the board in the fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth innings. Each of the top five hitters in the lineup tallied hits and RBIs. Both Glossa and Jordan Suvak accumulated 3 hits. Four of JCU's 16 hits were doubles.

Game 2
Heidelberg flipped the script in the second game. While Glossa did get JCU on the board again first, Heidelberg authored a quick response.

Berg got to Jay Rinehart early, so Bell needed to call in his fireman, Owen Gerba, in to calm things down. The Saint Ignatius product managed to do just that, keeping the damage to four runs.

After an inning and a third, Gerba gave way to CJ Desmond, who worked four strong innings before running into trouble in the seventh. The bullpen could not longer stem Berg's bats, as the Student Princes plated three runs in the eighth and three more in the ninth.

The story of the game was a quiet offense. JCU only managed six hits, two by Glossa.

Next Up
John Carroll will remain on the road for another critical OAC doubleheader. JCU heads to Ohio Northern on Saturday in Ada.
