Women’s Lacrosse Suffers Defeat Against St. John Fisher In Second Round Of NCAA Tournament

ROCHESTER, New York – The 2025 season was one to remember for the program.

After coming away with the victory against Grove City College yesterday, the Blue Streaks' historic campaign comes to a close with a loss against St. John Fisher University by a score of 21-5 in the second round of the 2025 NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Tournament.

This was the first meeting between the two teams going into the second round with St. John Fisher being ranked #14 in Division III.

When looking at the bigger picture from where the team was last year to this year, Coach Kelsey Shewbridge owed it to one main key throughout the entire season.

"The biggest thing for us this year is having a real sense of culture," Shewbridge mentioned. "Not just spelling it out, but actually acting on it. From top to bottom, we've had a majority of the team buying into that process and understanding how we compete. It's also understanding the way we become as people. Last year, we've been building it and we still continue to build upon that with more people buying in and earning the spot we are in now."

To start the game, St. John Fisher would earn a quick draw control, which led to their first shot of the game being off the post to regain possession. A penalty on Jill McDonnell would result in a free position goal from St. John Fisher to take an early 1-0 lead.

Another draw control was won by St. John Fisher, but the Blue Streak defense would allow a ground ball for Rachel Kroeger to get the offense going.

A caused turnover by St. John Fisher would result in a goal from Emma Biel to take a commanding 2-0 lead for the Cardinals.

Throughout the first half, the Cardinals were dominant in their draw controls, which led to them expanding upon their lead.

John Carroll would finally earn their first draw control as Abby Cassidy would collect the ball to get the others involved to get back into the game.

Another caused turnover would help St. John Fisher kept adding on to their lead, which led to them controlling the pace of the game so far.

Some plays from the Cardinals losing control of the game would happen as Emily Van Gorder would continue her ground ball efforts to help boost the Blue Streak offense to get on the board.

After a few penalties caused by JCU, St. John Fisher would continue to make the Blue Streaks pay as they would keep expanding their lead.

Olivia Hanulak would record the first shot on goal for the Blue Streaks in the second quarter.

A few costly turnover from St. John Fisher would allow players including Hannah Weiss to make up the ground ball efforts, as well as Abby Cassidy to get those free position attempts to help keep the Blue Streaks hopes alive.

Soon after, the Blue Streaks would finally get on the board with a goal scored by Abby Cassidy with an assist from Olivia Hanulak

A turnover on the Cardinals would result in an Anna Spitzer goal to cut the lead for St. John Fisher assisted by Vivian Rung. This was Spitzer's 27th goal scored this season.

The Cardinals would continue to add on to their lead going into halftime after a few draw control wins and costly penalties from the Blue Streaks.

John Carroll would come out with a different type of approach as Riley Knapp would win the quick draw control, which would result in another Anna Spitzer goal to get the third quarter started.

From then on, it was all St. John Fisher as they would continue to showcase their top offense against the Blue Streaks.

Josephine Lawler, who came in for the second half would record a total of five saves for the Blue Streaks to provide a spark for the team.

Another player was Hannah Weiss, who would come away with three ground balls as she became a huge contributor all over the field.

Even though it wasn't the result the Blue Streaks were looking for, they are very proud with the way the team fought not only today, but throughout the entire season.

"I am just really proud of the team," Spitzer emphasized. "We've all been working really hard together. This is something that wouldn't have happened without each other's support."

Riley Knapp mentions how big the mindset was for the team this year and how that carried on from start to finish.

"There's been a huge mental shift and the girls see it on the field," said Knapp. "We've been bought into this program with our confidence and drive throughout the whole year."

The 2025 John Carroll Women's Lacrosse team will go down in the history books as one of the best teams to ever take the field. Every game was another step in the right direction to get to this point. Coach Kelsey Shewbridge and the rest of the crew will look forward to what this program has in store for next year.
