Volleyball Loses 5-Set Heartbreaker at Home to Heidelberg

JCU commemorated its Morgan's Message Match tonight

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – A non-conference match between a pair of longtime rivals yielded a fantastic contest.

Unfortunately for the Blue Streaks, the thriller did not bounce their way.

After winning the first two sets, John Carroll Volleyball just couldn't put away the Heidelberg Student Princes, losing a 5-set frenzy by set scores of 25-22, 25-20, 15-25, 26-28, 15-17.

Before the match, the Blue Streaks dedicated the evening to Morgan's Message and shining a light on the importance of mental health awareness, especially with student-athletes. The pregame ceremony framed the evening, a spirited but respectful showdown.

The hosts came out swinging in the first set. Thanks to 5-point and 4-point runs, aided by Kallan Hrics and Natalie Glowe playing well up front, JCU managed a 17-13 lead. The Student Princes stayed right in it, narrowing the gap to two several times, but this one belonged to JCU, with Mary Kate Sheehan playing an essential role late.

The teams split the start of the second set, to the tune of an 11-11 tie. But strong passing by Tess Humphrey set up the hitters well, helping JCU open up a 19-14 lead. Glowe and Sheehan made for a formidable front line, keeping things out of arm's reach. JCU fired up a 25-20 set win.

The Student Princes used a pair of 4-point runs to take early control with a 13-7 advantage. A rare Olivia Mogyordy kill inspired the squad briefly, but then Berg ripped off a 7-point rally to run away with the set, 25-15.

The Student Princes threatened to gallop away with the fourth set, too, but JCU stemmed the tides in the early going, preventing any bigtime swings. JCU started to find some momentum with a 4-point run, with Sheehan and Grace Jones guiding the ship. The teams traded jabs and stayed very even all the way til the end. JCU had a chance to put it away, leading 25-24, and then 26-25. But Berg found the key kills late to force a tiebreaker set.

After digging a 3-0 hole, JCU fired back with Glowe at the service line, firing up an 8-3 lead. The switching of the benches midway through the set did not bring luck, as the lead evaporated courtesy of an 8-2 rally by the visitors. Even still, John Carroll used some Berg attack errors to take the Student Princes to the brink, 14-12. But JCU lost the killer instinct, with Berg tabbing three straight kills. JCU roared with a Glowe kill to even it at 15-all. But a pair of JCU attack errors ended the ballgame.

Glowe's evolution into a dynamic playmaker up front continued tonight in front of the home crowd with 18 kills, a new career high, while adding 13 digs. She finished with a rockstar hitting percentage of .308. Mary Kate Sheehan impressed as well, with 15 kills. Grace Jones showcased her strong arm with 11 kills, a season best. Hailey Williams also did well with 10 kills.

Tess Humphrey and Haley Nicholson split the setting work nicely with 26 and 25 kills. Olivia Mogyordy continued to anchor the defense with 25 digs.
