JCU Football Kicks Off New Era in NCAC with Dominant Win over Oberlin

The Blue Streaks celebrated Senior Day on a festive day in University Heights

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – A new era of John Carroll Athletics began in a festive way on Saturday afternoon.

In front of a fantastic crowd on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon at Don Shula Stadium, the Blue Streaks kicked off the North Coast Athletic Conference era.

The result matched the celebratory mood, with the Blue Streaks dominating Oberlin College in convincing fashion, 63-0, after commemorating Senior Day before the contest.

"I was happy to be able to get all of our seniors in the game on Senior Day. That was important to us as a program." said Head Coach Jeff Behrman '95. "It's a special class. I'm glad we could honor them and have a lot of respect for their perseverance and sticking to it, and being valuable to the football program and university."

John Carroll got on the board just a couple minutes into the ballgame with a 6-yard Nemo Jenkins touchdown. Following an Oberlin three-and-out, Nick Semptimphelter bombed a 36-yard TD pass to Tyren Montgomery. The aerial attack continued with a 48-yard Semptimphetler to Montgomery touchdown, and the rout was on.

Kenneth Rawls hauled in Semptimphelter's third TD pass of the day early in the second quarter for a 28-0 lead. Short scampers by Jenkins and Quincy Newsom upped the lead to 49-0 at the break.

Cohen Klimak and Josh Styles both reached paydirt in the third quarter. Nikko Georgiou tabbed a touchdown pass to Charlie Steinmetz to conclude the scoring. JCU did not find the endzone in the fourth quarter.

Semptimphelter finished a perfect 8-for-8 passing for 143 yards and 3 TDs, the second time in his career he finished with a flawless day. Nine players got carries in the game, with Quincy Newsom leading the way with 5 carries for 61 yards.

"It was great, we had an awesome  turnout today from our fans for senior day," said Semptimphelter. "It was great to get a win for them. We did a good job of protecting Don Shula Stadium, or the 'The Don,' as we call it."

Plenty of players got into the game today for the Blue Streaks, most especially on defense. A total of 26 players tallied tackles. Connor Roman topped the team with 5 tackles. Will Bates also had a very strong day, notching 4 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, and a sack. Chris Golson enjoyed senior day with 3 tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss.

John Carroll outgained Oberlin, 478-135, including 310-45 on the ground. In the 48 minutes of gameplay, JCU ran 41 plays and possessed the ball for 19 minutes. That equates to 3.3 points per minute and 1.5 points per play.

"It was a great environment," Behrman said of the home environment. "Our guys work really hard and I certainly want to be sure they're giving the fans who come to the game everything they came for."
