Gulla Repeats Feat, Earning Medalist to Guide Women's Golf at Mount Union Fall Invite

Thanks in part to Gulla's new record, JCU tied Mount Union for second

ALLIANCE, Ohio – For an encore performance, Julia Gulla one-upped herself.

The first year John Carroll Women's Golfer re-set the program single round record on Sunday, all while picking up a second medalist trophy.

Gulla notched an amazing 73 (+1) to lead the way to a second place tie with the host Purple Raiders at the Mount Union Fall Invitational at Tannenhauf Golf Club. The course played tough due to a lack of rain recently, so approach shots were difficult, but JCU managed well with a team score of 334.

A year ago, the Purple Raiders won the Ohio Athletic Conference Championship while JCU finished in fifth. This time, JCU tied Mount Union, winning the tiebreaker via the fifth player's score. What a difference a year makes with a fresh influx of talent.

"I just went out there and tried to keep myself focused by playing shot by shot," said Gulla. "I overcame some bad shots knowing each one counted, allowing me to end with a good round. More importantly, our team played well so we finished second in the tournament. It was a really exciting day and a really exciting start of the season."

Gulla started out strong, hitting par on her first eight holes. Heading into the back nine with a +1, Gulla kept on trucking. The Nordonia grad tapped in her first birdie on No. 10, and finished quite strong with birdies on No. 16 and No. 18. That allowed her to card a 73 (+1) for the day, quite the feat to guide the Blue Streaks.

A week ago, Gulla became JCU's first conference athlete of the week since 2019. How about this effort for a follow up?

Emily Burling followed behind with an 85, as the first year Streak concluded the day in 16th.

Alexandra Yaeger finished next with an 87. The Naperville North grad's day was highlighted by a birdie on No. 3.

Kyah Huckleberry and Lauren Roof tied for the final counting score with identical tallies of 89. Huckleberry secured a birdie on No. 8 to highlight her day.

Meanwhile, the JCU Gold squad earned a team score of 358 to finish in eighth out of 12 teams.

Meredith Thompson topped the team with a mark of 84, including a birdie on No. 11, to finish in 17th. Hannah Prince also notched a birdie (on No. 7) en route to a score of 86.

Erin McCaffrey rolled a 92, Madison Maxwell nabbed a 95, and Irena Steffas managed a 97 for the Blue Streaks. Maxwell's day included two birdies on No. 5 and 16 as highlights for her day.
