Women's Soccer Soars Past Oberlin in Homecoming Conquest

Andrea Quintero Delgado swiped the Yeowomen for the game-winning goal

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – The sun setting over Don Shula Stadium made for the perfect Homecoming setting for John Carroll Women's Soccer on Saturday.

The Blue Streaks delivered an important North Coast Athletic Conference victory, rolling for a 2-0 conquest over the Oberlin Yeowomen.

JCU advances to 2-1-1 in NCAC play, as the Blue & Gold look to be catching fire at the right time. JCU scored goals later in both halves, as the team is becoming good at finding the back of the net as of late.

The teams generated some corner kicks in the first portion of the opening stanza, but the opportunities were lacking. Neither team got any promising chances in the first 30 minutes of the game.

In the 36th minute, Andrea Quintero Delgado executed what can be described as a grand theft goal. With the Oberlin goalkeeper advancing downfield with the ball, the sophomore descended. The Oberlin keeper tried to pass it back to her defender, but the Las Vegas native swiped it. Quintero Delgado beat the defender and easily buried it for her first goal of the campaign.

Despite having a 1-0 lead at the half, the Blue Streaks did not rest on their laurels. John Carroll applied bigtime pressure early in the second half.

John Carroll poked and prodded at the Oberlin defenses, looking for the insurance tally. But the pass seemed to just miss or the shot just wide each time.

But though the Blue Streaks missed on the chances, they still enjoyed most of the possession. Oberlin did manage a few shots on goal in the second half, but Madison Skeese stood strong each time.

With 4:26 left to play, the Blue Streaks got the clincher. On a goalkick, Evie Coutris knocked a header forward. Brooke Berkowitz beat the Oberlin defender to the ball and netted the insurance goal late to seal the deal.

Skeese posted a shutout, her third straight, as JCU has allowed only two goals in four NCAC games.
