Men's Soccer Beats Fighting Scots in Important NCAC Victory

Three different players scored for JCU, including Louis Roseberry

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – A very important three points were added to John Carroll's tally in the North Coast Athletic Conference standings.

Two first-half goals, the latter coming with just 30 seconds left in the half, provided enough firepower to get the job done for John Carroll Men's Soccer.

The Blue Streaks defeated The College of Wooster, 3-1, on a beautiful yet progressively chillier evening at Don Shula Stadium. With the win, JCU now stands 3-3 in conference play with 9 points, good enough for third place with two matches left.

The opening of the first half was even. Each team enjoyed some possession time, but the Blue Streaks broke through in the 15th minute.

Bryce Sampson fired ahead a free kick from midfield deep into Wooster turf. The ball bounced off a Blue Streak and towards the net. Wooster deflected it and the goalkeeper got out of position trying to nab it. Nic Slagle pounced and fired home a shot high top shelf.

Wooster responded late in the first half in the 43rd minute. The Fighting Scots had three corners in a row, unable to capitalize, until finally breaking through. JCU had cleared the ball out, but Wooster send it back into play, as Connor Shea tied it up.

With 30 seconds left in the half, JCU replied. A free kick by Louis Roseberry from 12 yards out allowed for the perfect opportunity, and the veteran connected, scoring his first goal of the campaign.

Shots were fairly even, at 8-7 JCU.

The second half marked a seesaw contest, without much action or anything in the way of shots.

But the physicality was most certainly present. JCU was written up for a handful of yellow cards, but thankfully nothing that affected the outcome.

The shot of the half came from a corner kick for Wooster in the 62nd minute. Wooster then managed a lot of opportunities, including a shot in the 75th minute that was blocked by JCU.

A couple minutes after missing on a 1 v 1 chance in the 77th minute, Harley Forkins used his speed. The star midfielder from Mentor raced down the field right next to a Wooster player. Forkins' fancy footwork helped him beat the Wooster defenders and find twine for the insurance goal.

JCU held off Wooster down the stretch, allowing no shots the remainder of the game.
