Football Drops First Loss of the Season at #18 WashU

Dorian Facen Jr. hauled in a TD but the Streaks couldn't pull off a win in St. Louis

ST. LOUIS – In a battle of top-25 teams and first-time opponents, the hosts came away victorious.

#8 John Carroll Football started off solidly enough against #18 Washington University in St. Louis, but turnovers and long plays upended JCU's chances of winning on the road.

The Blue Streaks dropped the first loss of the season, 35-25, also marking JCU's first North Coast Athletic Conference defeat.

The visitors started out strong, forcing a quick WashU punt before driving 84 yards down the field. Nico McBride made a leaping grab in the end zone for a 22-yard touchdown to finish off the drive. With 2:59 left in the first, WashU evened things up with a 1-yard touchdown pass to complete a 77-yard march.

A 33-yard completion on the penultimate play of the first quarter setup the Bears deep in JCU territory. On the second play of the second quarter, WashU hit a 12-yard TD for the lead, which the hosts would never relent.

JCU drove to the edge of the redzone in response, but an interception turned the tides. The Bears hit a 76-yard touchdown deep down the middle for a huge score. A Tyler Green pass to Cohen Klimak went for 50 yards to set up a short TD connection from Green to Shane Lindstrom on a drag route for six.

Late in the half, JCU managed to march down the field into the WashU red zone. But the Bears defense held, so JCU settled for a 30-yard field goal.

Coming out of the half, the JCU offense scuffled on the first two drives. In response, the Bears put together a 7-play, 57-yard drive capped off by a 6-yard touchdown pass to make it a two-score game.

Late in the third quarter, the Bears recovered a fumble and quickly took advantage, as a 64-yard rush pushed the hosts' lead to 35-17.

JCU looked to respond but a pick just outside the red zone halted the momentum. The Blue Streaks trimmed the deficit midway through the fourth quarter with a Green touchdown pass to Dorian Facen Jr, and a well-executive two-point conversion gave the senior the octopus. But JCU couldn't score any more to make it a game late.

JCU did outgain WashU, 420-412, including 338 passing yards for Tyler Green. Lindstrom hauled in 9 catches for 80 yards and 1 TD. On the ground, Cohen Klimak led the way with 64 yards.

On defense, Gino Blasini led the way with 8 tackles. Ben Gabrich and Adam LaCarte tabbed 7 tackles
