#14 Football Falls at #25 DePauw in Key NCAC Loss

Turnovers turned the tides in the loss for the Blue Streaks

GREENCASTLE, Ind. – A year ago, John Carroll Football pulled out a memorable win at DePauw University in a huge North Coast Athletic Conference win.

This year, the Tigers controlled the ballgame and ensured there would be no late magic, as DePauw conquered the Blue Streaks in Indiana, 35-7.

On a gray Halloween afternoon, turnovers told the tale. John Carroll lost the turnover battle, 4-0, throwing three interceptions and fumbling once. The defeat very well may eliminate JCU from contention for the NCAA Division III Tournament.

John Carroll's first drive hinted at the trouble to follow. The Blue Streaks drove deep into DePauw territory on the first offensive drive of the day. On 2nd and 5 from the DePauw 5-yard line, the hosts picked off the Blue Streaks in the end zone.

As the second quarter started, DePauw was beginning to drive into JCU's end. With 10:52 to play in the second quarter, the Tigers punched it in from 3 yards out, concluding a 14-play, 80-yard drive.

On JCU's ensuing drive, the Blue Streaks fumbled on the second play. Without much chance to rest, the JCU defense allowed a 26-yard touchdown pass to quickly make it 14-0. John Carroll responded with its lone touchdown drive of the day.

A 32-yard pass to Nico McBride on the second play of the drive got the Blue Streaks going. A handful of plays later, Cohen Klimak charged through the DePauw defense on a 23-yard scamper, his first score since the Wittenberg game a month ago.

Following a DePauw three-and-out, the Blue Streaks marched into the red zone, but with 35 seconds left in the half, the drive stalled, and Colin Schuler missed a 35-yard field goal. So, the score stood 14-7 DePauw at the break.

At the start of the second half, JCU drove to the DePauw 39-yard line but sputtered there. Taking over at their own 15-yard line, the Tigers scratched and clawed for yards on the ground. After 11 plays, the Tigers forced it in from 1 yard out for a 21-7 lead.

Penalties and sacks hurt the Blue Streaks' offense, as the visitors failed to get anything going. The JCU defense kept it close with a couple of quick stops. But an interception with 5:48 left hurt the comeback effort, and DePauw burned two minutes off the clock while going 43 yards to put it away, 28-7.

A DePauw pick-six with 1:30 remaining finished off the Blue Streaks, 35-7.

JCU did outgain DePauw, 378-346, but the Tigers' advantage on the ground and on the line of scrimmage tells the tale. DePauw's Carson Johnson chipped away for 112 yards on 24 carries.

Tyler Green finished with 274 yards through the air. Cohen Klimak led the rushing attack with 46 yards on 7 carries. Nico McBride had a career day with 7 receptions for 113 yards.

Defensively, Thomas Shondel and Thomas Niederst topped the defense with 9 tackles apiece. Adam LaCarte tabbed 5 tackles, including 2 tackles for loss.
