In Season Opening Sweep at Mary Washington, JCU Baseball Impresses

JCU's pitching staff looked great and the bats drew walks in bunches

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – For the first time in five years, John Carroll Baseball will open the season with a 2-0 mark.

Against a traditionally strong University of Mary Washington team, the Blue Streaks' pitching looked fantastic and the bats did the job in two wins.

John Carroll fired past the Eagles, 7-4 and 8-3.

Game 1
Frank Freeman got the ball for the season opener and made the most of his opportunity. The veteran right-handed kept the hosts off the board for five innings. In the top of the fifth, the Blue Streaks solved Eagles' starter Matthew Boyd.

Dylan Sowers started the frame with a leadoff single. Following a hit by pitch and a fielder's choice, JCU got on the board, as George Haracz tapped a single to score Sowers. A Mary Washington error then aided the Blue Streaks, who took advantage. JCU's patience at the plate paid off with RBI walks by Jordan Suvak and Ethan Glossa, plus an RBI hit by pitch by Sowers after batting around.

When the dust settled, JCU possessed a solid 6-0 lead. Suvak added to the advantage further in the sixth with an RBI double. While the Eagles battled back in the bottom of the frame, finally getting to Freeman, it was too late. Jake Corll spelled Freeman out of the bullpen, pitching four great innings, allowing just one run.

The difference in the game was patience. JCU drew nine walks at the dish, while Mary Washington didn't get any free passes from JCU's star pitchers. Haracz guided the JCU bats with a 3-for-5 game at the plate,

Game 2
Luis Arreola got the starting nod in the second game. This time, Mary Washington got on the board first, plating a pair of runs. But the Blue Streaks' bats responded with consistent offensive production.

A Suvak RBI double and a Jake Monaco RBI single quickly knotted the game at twos after two. In the third, Konner Hauck grabbed the lead for JCU with an RBI single of his own.

John Carroll blew the game wide open in the fifth. A Glossa bases-clearing double suddenly made it a 6-2 JCU lead. Arreola handed the ball to Kiayuan Baskerville after four strong innings of work, and the sophomore stood strong. JCU plated one run apiece in the fifth and sixth to make Baskerville's life easier.

Roger Simon and Austin Miller both provided scoreless innings to finish the job. Glossa guided the offense by going 4-of-6 with 3 RBIs.

Next Up
John Carroll will host Mount Union and RIT next weekend at Schweickert Field, weather permitting.
