Women's Lacrosse Dominates Nazareth on Morgan's Message Day

The Blue Streaks are back at .500 thanks to a strong offensive output

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – On a frigid day dedicated to mental health awareness, John Carroll Women's Lacrosse excelled against Nazareth University on Wednesday afternoon.

A dominant second quarter by the Blue Streaks ensured a smooth victory for the Morgan's Message Game at Don Shula Stadium.

JCU evened out to 3-3 on the season with the SCORE HERE triumph.

While the Golden Flyers struck first, John Carroll revved up the offense near the midpoint of the opening quarter. Anna Vaccarelli fed nice passes to Kathleen Cagney and Abby Cassidy for JCU's opening goals. Mea Musillo then found twine twice in the span of a minute late in the quarter. Nazareth took a timeout in response.

JCU carried a 4-2 goal into the second quarter, though Nazareth struck just 45 seconds into the stanza. From there, it was all John Carroll in the remainder of the second.

For starters, Musillo scored a gorgeous one-timer goal off a Vaccarelli pass. Mary Grace Godleski scored a speedy goal soon after on a Cagney helper. A transition goal followed, as Anna Spitzer raced for a tally and a 7-3 lead. Not long after, Vaccarelli posted up in front of the crease and took a nice centering pass from Spitzer for an 8-3 lead.

John Carroll kept on scoring in the final five minutes. Cagney fired home a righty ripper off a Vaccarelli pass. Musillo connected on a woman-up goal to get JCU to double digits in the scoring column. Off the ensuing draw, Abby Cassidy notched a nice goal. Vivian Rung completed the first-half scoring with a caused turnover and a quick goal on the woman-up.

At the half, John Carroll stood in full control with a 12-3 lead.

Musillo kept her strong day going in the third quarter with a nice goal to get the running clock going. A Cassidy woman-up goal and free-position goal by Kate Balland led to a Nazareth timeout with the hosts ahead, 15-3, with 47 seconds left in the third. Following a pair of Nazareth green cards, Musillo ripped a goal bottom left for a 16-3 advantage at the end of the quarter.

Vanessa Stevens scored JCU's first goal of the fourth quarter at the 7:53 mark of the period, a fitting tally for one of the leaders of JCU's Morgan's Message chapter. The Blue Streaks cruised the rest of the way.

Vaccarelli topped the team with 7 points (1 goal, 6 assists). Musillo also thrived with 6 goals plus 4 groundballs, tied for the team lead with Mary Wymard. Rachel Kroeger got the win in net with 2 saves in the first three quarters, while Sarah McKallip notched 3 saves in the fourth quarter.
