Baseball Beats Bethany Thanks to Late Breakout

The Blue Streaks scored 5 runs in the 7th and 4 runs in the 8th while Perry pitched well

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – Inside the friendly confines of Schweickert Field, John Carroll Baseball has enjoyed keeping things interesting this season.

Trailing 6-2 after six frames, the Blue Streaks burst out for a combined nine runs in the seventh and eighth innings to beat Bethany College, an old league foe from the Presidents Athletic Conference.

JCU advances to 9-4 overall on the season with the victory, 3-0 at home.

Jake Monaco walked in JCU's first AB of the day. The shortstop soon stole second and got into scoring position for Ethan Glossa, who absolutely blasted a shot to right centerfield for a ground rule double and the game's first run.

On a bullpen day, Xander Gendics stood strong in his first career start for JCU through the first couple innings before running into trouble in the third. Bethany plated two to take a quick 2-1 lead.

JCU fired back in the bottom half of the inning. Dylan Sowers smacked a groundrule double to right and quickly scored on a Monaco RBI single to center.

Bethany roared back into the lead with a 3-run blast over the wall in right field in the fifth and notched one more in the sixth for a 6-2 lead.

Michael Perry checked into the game in the sixth and silenced the Bethany bats in impressive fashion, leaving room for JCU to warm up.

Walks and an error opened the door for a JCU comeback in the seventh. With the bases juiced and one out, a throwing error on what would have been a force play at home allowed two runs to score for JCU. Brett Krugman then stepped up to the dish and whacked a 3-run bomb. JCU suddenly stood ahead, 7-6.

In the eighth, JCU added more insurance. Sowers and Monaco got aboard with a walk and a hit by pitch.  Thomas Bates slotted a bunt single down the third base line to load the bases. George Haracz then lined a perfect single to right center to score two. A few batters later, another Bethany error allowed two more runs to score.

With a 5-run margin, Perry garnered a rare 2-4-3 double play to end the game and preserve JCU's third home win of the season.
