Men's Tennis Upended in NCAC Defeat at Wooster

The Blue Streaks lost close matches in singles play in the tough defeat

WOOSTER – Oh so close, but no cigar for John Carroll Men's Tennis.

The Blue Streaks swept doubles play and tallied a pair of close wins on the men's side. But a pair of close losses prevented the Blue & Gold from tallying the first North Coast Athletic Conference win of the season.

The College of Wooster snuck by John Carroll on Sunday, 4-3.

The match started on a fortuitous note for John Carroll, with three close doubles victories. Jean Davin and Anthony Markello picked up a 6-4 conquest at #1 doubles. Dylan Murlin and Cavan Boutillette fought for a 7-5 victory at #3. And at #2, Philip Gorun and Nathan Tam needed a tiebreaker, but got the job done, 7-3, to win the match, 7-3.

Nathan Tam fired up a 6-3 set one win at #4 singles before needing a tiebreaker in the second set. But the newcomer roared in the tiebreak, 7-0, to take the set, 7-6, and the match.

Dylan Murlin persevered at the #5 singles spot. The Hilliard native got behind, 4-6, before his 6-4 win in the second set forced a third set to decide it. The sophomore finished things off, 6-3, to grab a critical conquest for JCU.

The top of the lineup featured several close losses. Namely, Markello dropped a 3-6, 4-6 contest at #2 singles while Gorun dropped a 4-6, 4-6 defeat. But the toughest occurred at #1, where Davin fought to the end but came up just short. The France native fought back from a 2-6 opening set loss to force a third set with a 7-5 win. But in the deciding third set, Davin dropped a heartbreaker, 5-7.
