Softball Sweeps Defending NCAC Co-Champion Denison

The Blue Streaks walked off the Big Red in dramatic fashion in Game 2

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – Nothing beats playing at home.

John Carroll Softball enjoyed the opportunity to play a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader at Bracken Field on Saturday on a sunny, slightly chilly Saturday.

So much in fact that the Blue Streaks swept Denison University, the reigning co-regular season champs of the NCAC.

John Carroll fired up a 9-6 win in the opener and walked off the Big Red in the second game, 2-1.

Game 1
The Blue Streaks got on the board first in their first ups of the first NCAC doubleheader at Bracken Field in program history. Elizabeth Hohlefelder got aboard with a single up the middle. She stole second and got to third on a groundout. Jordan Anderson got her home with a blooper bouncing in shallow center, good enough to plate JCU's first run of the game.

The Blue Streaks did more damage in the third. Ashley Sykes drew a walk to start the frame, advancing to third on a Hohlefelder single. Anderson played the catalyst again, slotting a single through the left side for a second RBI in as many at-bats. Melissa Smith then belted a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Hohlefelder for a 3-0 lead.

Denison finally got to Kristin Dems in the fifth, plating four runs, but Casey Cash checked in and prevented the Big Red from taking the lead. In the bottom of the inning, JCU provided an answer. Elaina Rodriguez knocked one in on a single to left center, Bella Carcioppolo doubled down the line to plate one, and Hohlefelder knocked in a final run for good measure.

Denison threatened seriously in the sixth, plating a pair, but Anderson entered the game and settled things down. In the bottom of the frame, she helped her own cause. The graduate student blasted a beautiful homer over the wall in center, making it a 3-run game.

Anderson set down the Big Red in order in the final frame, two by strikeout, to preserve the bigtime victory for the Blue Streaks. It was quite the game for Anderson, who not only got the save, but finished with 3 hits and 3 RBIs.

Game 2
A JCU error in the top of the first allowed the Big Red to get an early upper-hand in a pitcher's duel.

Madilyn Moffitt and Emily Graves took turns setting down the side in rapid succession. The two veteran hurlers both looked locked in, working effectively.

To start the bottom of the sixth, Ashley Sykes lofted a nice shot to right center, legging out a very impressive triple, some might argue the most exciting play in softball. Sykes' triple marked the first extrabase hit of her collegiate career. Hohlefelder quickly got her home, with a flyball deep enough to right field to bring home Sykes for a sacrifice fly.

JCU's Graves allowed a leadoff single in the seventh, but got through the top half of the frame unscathed. In the home half, Bella Hunter opened up with a single through the left side at the end of a strong at-bat. Rodriguez advanced her to second with a nice sacrifice bunt. In a smart move, Tony Scibelli summoned Brynne Smith to pinch hit.

Moffitt, Denison's pitcher, had not seen JCU's first-year hitter from Eastlake. It proved to be quite the battle at the plate, with Smith working to a 3-2 count. Smith lined the payoff pitch to right center, and the diving Denison centerfielder could not make the play. Hunter charged around the basepaths for the game-winning run, and Smith was mobbed by her teammates.

The RBI double to walk off the Big Red defined the day for JCU, as the hosts fought tooth and nail, playing smart softball all day in a pair of fantastic wins.

Emily Graves, the NCAC leader in ERA, provided another stellar outing. The senior provided 7 excellent innings, allowing just three hits, and her run was unearned.

John Carroll will celebrate Senior Day on Sunday, hosting Wittenberg University in NCAC action starting at 1 pm.
