Zarek's Golden Goal Lifts Men's Lacrosse to OT Victory at DePauw

Braden Zarek scored JCU's final 4 goals for a comeback win in Indiana

GREENCASTLE, Ind. – Braden Zarek shined as the hero when John Carroll Men's Lacrosse needed him most.

Following three straight North Coast Athletic Conference losses, the Blue Streaks needed a boost. And did they ever get one on Saturday.

Zarek's game-winning goal in overtime lifted the Blue Streaks to a huge 11-10 victory at DePauw University on Saturday afternoon. The massive win keeps JCU in contention for the NCAC Tournament.

DePauw opened the contest with two goals before the Blue Streaks came alive. JCU scored four goals in the final seven minutes of the quarter, all by different players. Braden Zarek, Billy Paladino, Cameron Miller, and Josh Lombardo all found twine in an excellent quarter for the visitors. Heading into the second, JCU held a 4-2 lead.

Seamus Nicholson opened the scoring in the second, taking a pass from Josh Lombardo. DePauw ended nearly an 8-minute drawing closer for a moment, until Zarek replied 28 seconds later. JCU carried a 6-3 lead into the break.

The third quarter has been much-maligned this season for the Blue Streaks, and today's game was no different. DePauw outscored JCU in the third, 4-1. Sean Hogan scored for JCU, but the visitors managed to knot the game at 7-all.

DePauw continued the run into the fourth, taking the lead for the first time since the 12:09 mark of the opening quarter. The Tigers raced to a 10-7 lead at the midpoint of the fourth, but the Blue Streaks awoke from the scoring slumber.

Braden Zarek put the team on his back down the stretch, beginning with a tally at 7:19 off a nice move from X. The junior really made things interesting with 2:56 to play, slimming the deficit to just one goal on a sidewinder ripper off a nice Casey LaForce pass.

With the clock hitting one minute, Zarek played some strong defense and caused a turnover on a DePauw clear. The ball floated to Ivan Roeder at midfield. The sophomore slung it to Zarek, who shocked the Tigers by firing it home in transition to knot the ballgame at 10. Neither team could score in the waning moments, forcing overtime.

In extra time, Zarek played the hero. The Brother Rice grad took a nice pass from Larry Voss (taking a hit while passing it) and surprised the goalie with an underhand ripper. The netminder had no chance, and Zarek won the day for the Blue Streaks.

Zarek topped all scorers with 6 goals, three more than any other player. Without a doubt, the junior deserves all the praise for lifting the Blue Streaks to victory.

Carmine Periandri deserves plenty of kudos, as well, winning 15-of-22 faceoffs. JCU has struggled at the dot this year, so winning the faceoffs battle was a breath of fresh air. Meanwhile, Nicholas Yemma led the visitors with 5 groundballs and Ivan Roeder tabbed 2 caused turnovers.
