Montgomery will fulfill his dream of playing in the NFL

NASHVILLE – A player from John Carroll University is headed to the National Football League.

In a realization of his Mom's dream, Tyren Montgomery '25G, is set to play in the NFL.

Montgomery was signed by Tennessee Titans. JCU Athletic Hall of Famer David Ziegler '00, '07G is the Assistant General Manager with the Titans.

"Congratulations to Ty and his family on signing an NFL contract. The Titans are getting a great player, fierce competitor, and a wonderful person," said Vice President of Athletics & Head Football Coach Brian Polian. "We are very excited for Ty and know that he is going to take advantage of this opportunity. We are also incredibly proud as we have had the privilege to witness the amount of hard work and dedication he's invested into this dream. His journey is just beginning, and we will support and cheer for him every step of the way because he is forever a member of the John Carroll family."

Montgomery starred as a wide receiver for John Carroll Football in 2024 and 2025. Montgomery's story could one day be a Hollywood script, set in Texas and then University Heights.

The Woodlands, Texas native began college at LSU as a basketball player before returning home to be closer to his Mom, Tara, as she courageously battled cancer. Throwing the ball around in the backyard with his brother, Tyren discovered the game of football. Following a flag football stint, he gave it a try at Nicholls State before finding a home in University Heights.

All Montgomery did was become one of the best receivers in John Carroll Football history.

Montgomery enjoyed a truly remarkable career for John Carroll. The graduate student set the program record for career receiving yards with 2,599 and notched 32 touchdowns. In 2025, Montgomery set JCU records with 119 receptions and 1,528 receiving yards, a model of consistency all season long. The Texan notched 15 touchdown catches, second only to his program-record 17 TDs in 2024.

In his second season at JCU, the star wideout garnered D3football.com 1st Team All American, AFCA 2nd Team All American, AP 2nd Team All American, and First Team All-NCAC honors. He averaged an amazing 109.14 receiving yards per game and his 8.5 receptions per game rated seventh in D-III. In his first year, Montgomery garnered the Ohio Athletic Conference's Wide Receiver of the Year award.

After NFL scouts patrolled the JCU sidelines during practices for much of the year, Montgomery wowed NFL execs at the America Bowl (under the watchful eye of new JCU offensive coordinator Scott Phillips) and then famously at the Senior Bowl.

Since Larry Wanke stood proudly as Mr. Irrelevant in 1991, London Fletcher '97 and Tom Arth '03 have both repped JCU in the NFL.
