Softball Splits with DePauw in Final Home Action of the Season

The Blue Streaks won in walkoff fashion in the first game on an Izzy Coode RBI single

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – In the final home games of the season at John Carroll Softball split with one of the top teams in the North Coast Athletic Conference, DePauw University.

The Blue Streaks roared for a walkoff winner in the opener in a lengthy 8-inning war, 8-7. In Game 2, the Tigers roared for a run-rule win, 10-14.

While the loss eliminated JCU from NCAC Tournament contention, beating one of the best teams in the conference is still an impressive feat.

Game 1
The opening game was a marathon game of seesaw. John Carroll opened with 7 unanswered runs, DePauw came all the way back to tie it, and Izzy Coode hit a game-winning RBI single in the eighth inning to end a game that lasted 2 hours and 45 minutes.

Playing for a final time at Bracken Field, the bats came ready to roll.

Brynne Smith got aboard to start the second with a single to right. Melissa Smith promptly hit a bigtime, emotional homer, bringing the Bracken Field faithful to life. But JCU wasn't done.

Elaina Rodriguez added another tally to the board with an RBI double before JCU really broke it open. Following a DePauw error, Jordan Anderson blasted a beautiful 3-run homer, and the Blue Streaks suddenly stood ahead, 6-0.

Smith continued her onslaught in the third with a solo shot, marking the second double-homer game of her collegiate career.

DePauw chipped away at the deficit, finally getting to Anderson in the fourth. The Tigers tallied three runs in the fourth and then two in the fifth. DePauw plated two runs in the sixth to tie the game at 7-7 and leading to a call to the bullpen for Kristin Dems. The junior kept DePauw off the board, allowing a chance for heroics.

Izzy Coode doubled off the top of the wall to start the bottom of the seventh. Brynne Smith then walked, and the runners advanced on a wild pitch to set two runners in scoring position with no outs. But somehow, someway DePauw escaped to force extra innings.

Dems set down the Tigers in the eighth. With one out in the bottom of the frame, Abby Farber drew a walk. Bella Carcioppolo checked back in for her, got to second on a hit by pitch and then third on a flyout. Then, Coode played the hero.

Coode shot a single up the middle to plate Carcioppolo, setting off an eruption from the home dugout as the Streaks stunned the top team in the conference standings. JCU's win knocked DePauw down to second in the conference behind Wittenberg.

Game 2
Clearly frustrated by the opening loss, DePauw roared back at the start of the second game. The Tigers fired up a 4-run first inning, leading to a quick call to the bullpen for JCU. Kaylinn Samuelraj settled things down and got out of the first.

JCU's bats provided a quick answer. Anderson clubbed a 2-run homer to left field, as the ball wound up in the middle of the
Schweickert Field's left field. A Bella Hunter sacrifice fly added one more run before a 31-minute first inning came to a close.

On an eerily similar hit, Coode tied the ballgame in the second with another perfectly placed single up the middle.

Samuelraj did a great job of escaping a jam in the top of the fourth, pitching excellently in the longest outing of her career. DePauw finally found an opening in the fifth, loading the bases with one out. JCU called to the bullpen, but the flames did not die out.

The Tigers put up a 10-spot in the fifth inning to put it out of reach, or so it seemed. John Carroll roared back in the bottom of the frame to extend the game with a wild 4-run inning.

In the final couple of innings, the Blue Streaks scored a couple of runs, highlighted by an RBI single made from Elizabeth Hohlefelder and a home run from Jordan Anderson, but the comeback wasn't enough as the Tigers held off their momentum.

John Carroll enters the final week of the regular season with a 13-16 record, 4-8 in NCAC play.

Next Up
The Blue Streaks will head to Hiram College for a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday.
