Women's Lacrosse Bows Out of NCAC Tournament at Denison

The Blue Streaks could not upend the #6 Big Red in the semifinal

GRANVILLE, Ohio – The journey came to a close on Wednesday evening for John Carroll Women's Lacrosse.

The Blue Streaks could not upset the highly favored Denison Big Red, ranked #6 in the latest IWLCA poll, in the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament Semifinal.

The campaign concluded with a 19-7 loss to the Big Red, the #1 seed, on the road. With the defeat, JCU ends the year at 9-7.

On Saturday, JCU kept it close with Denison on Senior Day. The 4-goal defeat marked the closest margin of victory for Denison against an NCAC all season. But the Big Red fired out of the gate on Wednesday evening at home and appeared in control the whole way.

Denison fired off 4 goals in the first half of the opening quarter, leading to a JCU timeout. After the break, a JCU penalty led to a Denison woman-up goal, as the Big Red matched their first-half output from Saturday in just 8:31.

Anna Vaccarelli got the visitors on the board with 5:36 left to play in the first quarter, using a screen to roll to the slot and fire a shot high to beat the goalie. With 1:03 on the clock, Mea Musillo worked through checks and slotted home a nice goal to trim the margin to 6-2 after 15 minutes of play.

Denison stepped on the gas pedal to start the second, firing home two tallies in the opening 90 seconds. The Big Red got to nine goals before JCU managed a response. Musillo tabbed a free-position goal midway through the period, and Riley Knapp took a nice pass from Vaccarelli and scored with 37 seconds left. JCU trailed at the break, 10-4.

Similar to the last matchup, Denison roared out of the halftime break. The Big Red looked invigorated, going on a 5-goal run. Spitzer ended it with a goal off a Musillo pass, but it was far too late, as Denison enjoyed a dominant 15-5 advantage.

Besides Denison's shots advantage (25-15), many of the stats were fairly even. The Big Red simply took advantage of nearly every opportunity to score.

Musillo and Knapp both notched goals in the fourth quarter, but the Big Red kept it well out of reach.

Musillo led the offense with 3 goals and an assist. Hannah Weiss enjoyed a nice game with a team-high 5 groundballs plus a caused turnover. Also playing in senior sendoff, Emily Van Gorder nabbed 2 CTs and 3 GBs. Abby Cassidy snagged 6 draw controls.
