TWO WALKOFFS: JCU Baseball Beats Kenyon Twice in Fun Day at Schweickert Field

The Blue Streaks walked off the Owls on a wild pitch and an infield single

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – Walkoff wins are not uncommon, but you want to know what is rare? Winning two games on the same day by a run in walkoff fashion.

Even winning two games by a lone run on the same day is out of the ordinary. Since Schweickert Field's inception in 1992, you can count on one hand the number of times John Carroll Baseball has won both games of a doubleheader at home.*

The Blue Streaks bested Kenyon College, 8-7 and 10-9, to advance to 5-1 in North Coast Athletic Conference play early in the campaign.

In the opener, it was a walkoff wild pitch that did the trick for John Carroll. In the nightcap, a wild inside-the-park Konner Hauck homer tied it and a Chris Bach game-winning RBI infield single won the ballgame. The Blue Streaks are now 8-0 at Schweickert Field this year.

Game 1
Topsy-turvy is perhaps the best phrase to describe the opener with the Owls.

After three solid innings by Kiayuan Baskerville on the mound, John Carroll got on the board in the third. Nico Ruoti tabbed an RBI single and Brett Krugman hit a no-doubter sacrifice fly to center for a 2-0 lead. Just one out from escaping a bases-loaded jam in the fourth. Baskerville allowed a deep, lofting flyball to left that found grass and cleared the bases. An error extended the inning and scored one more run, leading Bobby Bell to turn to his bullpen. Drew Walker got out of the jam.

Immediately, the Blue Streaks replied. Chris Bach, the first batter in the bottom of the frame, blasted a beautiful homer over the wall in left field. His homerun trot invigorated the bats, as Jalen Jackson singled to right and soon scored on a Jordan Suvak double to the gap in left center. An Ethan Glossa single to left then scored Suvak for a 5-4 lead.

CJ Desmond, Xander Gendics, and Michael Perry kept the Owls off the board until the top of the ninth. In the meantime, Ruoti added insurance with a nice 2-run double down the line in left in the sixth.

Kenyon managed to tie the ballgame in the ninth, with an RBI single and a 2-run double doing the damage. But Austin Miller managed to stand the go-ahead run at second base.

Krugman singled to left to start the bottom of the frame, and George Haracz knocked him over with a sacrifice bunt. Bach got him to third with a single. With the game-winning run on third, Jalen Jackson stepped up to the dish. Making just his second start of the year, the DeMatha Catholic grad smartly dodged an inside pitch, and the catcher could not corral the heater. Krugman dashed home for the rare walkoff win on a wild pitch.

Glossa finished with a 3-hit game, while Suvak enjoyed a 2-double day. Ruoti's 3 RBIs marked a career high as well.

Game 2
Kenyon managed to soar ahead in the early going, as the Owls plated three in the second inning off Jake Corll. But the senior settled into the game.

His bats provided some run support in response in the third. Three straight singles by Suvak, Glossa, and Ruoti loaded the bases with no outs. Krugman drew an RBI walk, leading Kenyon to turn to the bullpen. Haracz managed an RBI walk of his own, but then Kenyon managed to escape the bases-loaded jam.

The Owls added to the lead in the sixth, as an error to start the frame wound up hurting the Blue Streaks, to the tune of four runs, three unearned. In the ensuing half-inning, Kenyon errors cost the visitors a couple runs.

A rare two-triple inning plated a pair of runs in the seventh for JCU. Konner Hauck opened the frame with a triple to left center, scoring on the next batter thanks to a Thomas Bates sac fly. Andreas Lazar then got aboard with a walk, and with two outs, Glossa got him in. The senior blasted a triple to deep center, slimming the margin to just one run.

Kenyon critically got two runs back in the eighth, though Krugman quickly responded in the bottom of the frame. The Saint Ignatius grad blasted a ball over the leftfield fence nearly to Washington Boulevard. Things continued to get wacky.

Following a Bach double, Hauck hit a wonderful shot to straightaway center that the Owl fielder could not corral. The ball skipped all the way to the fence, and Hauck roared around the bases for a rare inside-the-park homer to tie the ballgame at nine heading into the final frame. Kenyon got two aboard in the ninth with no outs, but Austin Miller escaped unscathed.

To start the home half, Glossa drew a walk, advancing to second on a Ruoti sacrifice bunt and then third on a Haracz flyout. With two outs, Bach approached the dish. The catcher hit a sharp grounder down the third base line. The Owl third baseman made a sliding stop and rocketed the ball to first. Bach dove headfirst to the bag and barely beat the throw, setting off the second huge celebration of the day.

Krugman hammered three baseknocks (all extrabase hits) and 3 RBIs, plus two walks.

Next Up
The Blue Streaks head to Tiffin for a matchup with Heidelberg, an old conference foe, on Sunday at 1 pm.

*If you made it all the way to the end of the article, you might just like to know the four previous times that JCU won twice by a run in a doubleheader at Schweickert Field.
  • April 4, 1993 vs. Ohio Northern: 1-0 and 3-2
  • March 23, 1999 vs. Penn State Behrend: 2-1 and 9-8
  • April 11, 2006 vs. Baldwin Wallace: 10-9 and 8-7 (Game 1 walkoff)
  • April 17, 2012 vs. Muskingum: 4-3 and 2-1
Bonus trivia question for Don McPhillips and JCU Baseball nerds: Name the reliever who earned both saves in the 2012 games vs. Muskingum. The Evanston, Illinois native led the team with 4 saves that season, finishing with a sterling 0.56 ERA in 14 appearances.
