Women's Tennis Succumbs to #21 Denison in the NCAC Tournament Semifinal

A pair of narrow three-set losses undid JCU's upset bid

GAMBIER, Ohio – A strong first season in the North Coast Athletic Conference came to a close on Saturday for John Carroll Women's Tennis.

The Blue Streaks battled but fell in the semifinal round of the NCAC Tournament to a strong foe in Denison University, the #2 seed and ranked #21 in NCAA Division III.

The Big Red advanced to the title bout against host Kenyon College with a 4-1 victory.

Doubles play hinted at the uphill battle that JCU would face. Denison won the doubles point with two wins at #1 and #3, both by scores of 6-2.

In singles play, Denison opened with a conquest at the #4 spot. The next to fall was Maddie Kavenagh, though the veteran fought tooth and nail. In her final match, the star dropped the first set, 0-6 before roaring back for a 6-1 win. But her foe at #2 singles battled for the victory with a 2-6 decision.

Backs against the wall, the Blue Streaks continued to fight. Morgan Dobos got John Carroll on the board for a win. The senior snagged a 6-3 set one win before dropped a 3-6 set two defeat. In the tiebreaking set, Dobos roared for a 6-0 conquest.

A heartbreaker loss at the #1 flight ended the match. Evelyn Deren worked for a 6-2 opening victory before falling in the second, 1-6. In a dramatic third-set war, Deren's foe outlasted her in a 7-5 marathon. The three-setter bout ended the match in favor of Denison.

The Blue Streaks close out the campaign with an 11-6 record and a very strong season to build off of moving forward.
