Women's Soccer Strolls by Salisbury for a Nice Sunday Win

Avery Berner scored the insurance goal, the first tally of her career

SALISBURY, Md. – Part of having a young team is understanding that it will take time to figure out how to find ways to score goals.

On Sunday in the second game of the Salisbury University Classic, John Carroll Women's Soccer found some answers, netting two goals.Ā

The Blue Streaks ended the journey to Maryland, beating the host Sea Gulls, 2-0.

In the opening half, Salisbury got more opportunities on the stat sheet. The Sea Gulls and Blue Streaks took turns on the attack, with each squad earning chances. But neither team could find twine.

In the 55th minute, JCU broke through. It began with an innocent looking Madison Skeese goal kick. After a JCU pass up from the back line, Gracie Villwock fended off a defender and tapped a pass forward, waving her hand as if to urge forward the attack. A deep pass up the right side bounced once before Brooke Berkowitz settled the ball, took a touch, and left-footed a wonderful shot low right for the opening goal.

About 20 minutes later, JCU found the key insurance goal. Julia Ciura played it from the backline up to Sophia Generalovich, who tapped it left to Bella Carcelli. The senior legged a pass ahead while getting toppled by a Sea Gull. The Salisbury keeper raced out to the left, trying to stop Avery Berner, but the first year tapped a left-footed shot past the keeper for the key goal.

The tally marked the first career goal for the rookie from Dublin, Ohio.

Madison Skeese turned away a pair of shots on goal in the waning moments of the game, securing her second shutout of the season.

Coincidentally, both of JCU's wins have come on Sunday this season, evening out JCU to 2-2-1 on the year.

Next Up
The Blue Streaks will have one more away game before returning to the friendly confines of Don Shula Stadium next Saturday. JCU will travel to Trine in Indiana on Wednesday.
