UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – As the Blue Streaks took the field on a day dedicated to mental health awareness, the first game of conference play did not end in John Carroll's favor.

A rainy afternoon gave way to a competitive match between the John Carroll Blue Streaks and the DePauw Tigers. The Tigers pulled away late, making the long trip back to Indiana with a 4-1 victory.

The afternoon started off strong, with back-and-forth possessions all across the field. An aggressive showing from the Streaks led to a penalty stroke for the Tigers late in the first period. NCAC Athlete of the Week, Ellison Hilgendorf, came up with a massive stop for the Streaks, ending the quarter with 5 saves on 5 shots.

The Streaks came out hot in the second quarter. Freshman forward Mia Curtis was able to find the back of the cage just two minutes into the quarter – her first goal of the season. This gave the Streaks a 1-0 lead over the Tigers.

The lead did not last long. The  Tigers answered just 3 minutes later with a goal off of a penalty corner. It was a tied game going into the half.

As the rain picked up, the aggression did not stop. Both teams seemed to be feeling the effects of the dreary day, as the only notable plays in the third quarter were fouls. Although neither team was able to get on the board in the third quarter, the fight continued.

It was a defense-heavy fourth quarter for the Streaks. As neither team was able to get a point on the board since the first quarter, it looked as if the game was going to extra time. However, a penalty corner gave way for a Tigers goal at 52:31. With just six minutes left in the game, the Tigers had a 2-1 lead over the Streaks.

It seemed as if there was still hope for the Streaks. Until the Tigers got yet another one on the board at 56:58 following a penalty corner.

With a 3-1 lead and only two minutes left in the game, things were not looking good for John Carroll. DePauw did not let up as they nailed one more in the back of the cage with only 30 seconds left in the game.

The game ended with a 4-1 victory for the Tigers.

With 3 of DePauw's 4 goals being off penalty corners, and 3 green cards on the day for the Streaks, it seems as if John Carroll needs to play a cleaner game if they want to secure a win.
