Football Roars Past Owls on Senior Night Under the Lights

The Blue Streaks scored 35 points in the first quarter and never looked back in the home opener

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – The first Saturday night football game under the lights at Don Shula Stadium since 2016 could not have gone much better.

John Carroll Football dominated Kenyon College while celebrating Senior Day. The Blue Streaks led from start to finish against the Owls in North Coast Athletic Conference play.

JCU advances to 3-0 on the season with the 56-7 victory on Saturday night, the first JCU Football home game on a Saturday night since 2016.

"We were very pleased with the effort, we were very excited about the amount of players who got to play on Senior Night," said Head Coach Brian Polian '97. "Every senior on the roster played significant minutes in the game, which I'm really pleased about. We challenged the team that we needed to get out to a quick start, and 21-0 in the blink of an eye was a quick start."

John Carroll started with the ball and drove down the field to paydirt in 8 plays. Quincy Newsom hauled in a pass in the flat for a touchdown, dancing in for an 8-yard touchdown score.

After a quick Kenyon three-and-out, the Blue Streaks struck again. This time, Dorian Facen Jr scored on a grab-and-go, evading tacklers en route to a 19-yard score. JCU got the ball back quickly thanks to a great Jacob Hufnagel interception, his first of the season. Just a few plays later, Cohen Klimak followed his blockers out of a jumbo package (including a knockdown block by Cale Doyle) for a 4-yard score, showing his contact balance in scoring.

"The seniors are my best friends," said Hufnagel after Senior Night. "We've been together for four years now, those guys mean a lot to me. We've been through hell and back, props to them, they'll always be by my side."

Following another quick Kenyon drive, JCU struck again on the first play of the drive. Josh Styles caught a pass in the flat and knocked away a would-be tackler. The sophomore soon found space and galloped 58 yards to glory with downfield blocks by Shane Lindstrom, William Hanson, and Facen.

"It's a great feeling, having those blockers for me, I wouldn't have been able to do it without them. Dorian had a great block and Will too, I wouldn't have been able to do it without them," said Styles. "After the broken tackle, I saw the lane open up to the sideline and saw my blockers down field and took the opportunity."

The Blue Streaks were not done in a wild first quarter. With 1:11 left, Nolan Tanner caught his second career touchdown pass, hauling in a catch across the middle from Tyler Green. JCU held a 35-0 lead after the end of the first quarter.

Early in the second quarter, the Blue Streaks scored again to bring in the backups. Green found Lindstrom for a 27-yard touchdown, as the senior wideout showcased his trademark shiftiness in dashing in for a score.

Shortly before the 2-minute warning, Lars Broberg enjoyed a collegiate first. The sophomore from Gilmour Academy made a nice hop and catch, running through a tunnel of blockers en route to the end zone for his first career TD. Bryce Tubin made the throw for the 49-0 lead.

A special teams miscue by the Owls allowed Javi Quimba to score a touchdown while celebrating his senior day, upping the lead to 56-0 with time left in the third quarter.

Kenyon broke the shutout late in the fourth quarter, but JCU still won plenty handily.

The Blue Streaks outgained the Owls by a wide margin, 453-147. Tyler Green finished 13-of-15 for 233 yards and 5 touchdowns. A total of seven different Blue Streaks scored touchdowns. On defense, 25 Blue Streaks recorded tackles.

"Our roster is pretty big compared to our peer institutions. There are a lot of guys on the team who selflessly go to practice every day and help us prepare, and they don't get a lot of burn," said Polian. "We got a ton of guys into the game, which I'm really pleased about because those guys help us get ready."
