Men's Golf Smashes Single Round Record and Wins Ted Barclay Invitational

Wade Boyle claimed medalist honors as the Blue Streaks won the event by 9 strokes

GRANVILLE, Ohio – You couldn't have asked John Carroll Men's Golf for a much better start to the fall. 

The Blue Streaks shattered the program record for a single round score. John Carroll's team score of 277 (-7) set the stage for a victorious day two.

With a round of 289 (+5) in the second round, the Blue Streaks won Denison's Ted Barclay Invitational at Denison Golf Club. Wade Boyle claimed Medalist honors for the event.

Without a doubt, it was a great team win. Especially considering that the team set the school record for a best round on Day 1 of the season. 

The JCU "B" Team also competed at the Gatorade Collegiate, acquitting themselves well. A recap of their efforts comes later in the article.

Wade Boyle anchored the team to start the season, picking up where he left off after winning the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament in the spring. The senior recorded the best round of the day on Saturday, soaring for a 68 (-3), which was made possible by three back-nine birdies. His clutch gene made another appearance on Sunday, as the veteran sank a clinching birdie on No. 18. Boyle's final line of 68-69-137 stood as the winning score by a lone stroke. 

Daniel Donahue nipped at Boyle's heels on the first day, with three birdies on the front nine and a fantastic eagle on No. 11 to end the day with a 69 (-2). Three birdies in five holes in the middle of his second round keyed his even round of 71 on Sunday. The Pittsburgh native tied for third for the weekend.

Justy VonLehmden made an appearance in the top 10 for the weekend. The senior bogeyed two of his first four holes before playing mistake-free the rest of the way, with a pair of birdies on Par 5 holes helping him finish at 70 (-1). A total of 10 par holes in a row aided his Sunday effort of 73 (+2), propelling him to a tie for ninth.

Austin Malley experienced a very solid opener on Saturday, with a birdie on No. 6 highlighting a two-over-par day of 73. Three birdies on the back nine buoyed Malley in the second round with a 76.

Owen Tehan excelled on the back nine on Saturday, with three straight birdies on No. 11-13. A birdie to close it out helped Tehan collect a one-under-par mark of 70 for the day. The sophomore scuffled a bit on the second day with a 79 but did have a couple birdies mixed in.

London Hoyser (78-77-155) and Blake Finneran (80-79-159) competed as individuals for the Blue Streaks in the tournament. Finneran, a Sandusky native, made his JCU debut in the event. 

"This is a great team win. Denison Golf Club has become one of our favorite places to play," said Head Coach Jeff Pawlowski '91. "Denison University was a great host."

Meanwhile, the younger JCU "B" squad took part in the College of Wooster's Gatorade Collegiate at Zoar Village Golf Club in Dover, Ohio. JCU finished sixth with a team line of 298-295-392 (+17).

Nick Pihl guided the team effort. The sophomore stayed in the fray in the opening round with a two-over-par start (74). Pihl rolled in the second round with a pair of birdies in his first three holes, helping him finish at 71 (-2) and in 10th place for the event.

Ethan Cooper made his JCU debut by opening up with a par round on Saturday before finishing three-over-par on Sunday. His mark of 147 tied for 15th.

Kamden Mowry began with a 77 before rebounding with a one-under-par score of 71 on Day two to finish one spot behind Cooper.

Carson Meyer carded a final mark of 75-78-153 to provide JCU's final score. Joseph Boon netted a line of 78-79-157.

The JCU "A" Team will be headed to the Toftrees Invitational in State College, PA next weekend. The JCU "B" Team will be closer at the Jimmy Hanlin Collegiate Invitational at Little Mountain Golf Club in Painesville.
