Jay Murphy

Jay Murphy, who recorded 300 victories in 15 years as a collegiate baseball head coach at Cleveland State University and George Washington University, will commence his seventh season on the staff of the John Carroll baseball program as an assistant coach for the 2012 campaign.

"Coach Murphy brings a wealth of experience to our program every year," said JCU head coach Mark Thibeault. "Working with him these last six seasons has enhanced my ability to grow as a coach."

Murphy will work primarily with the infielders and assist Coach Thibeault with the hitting duties.

"With Coach Murphy directly in charge of our infielders, our fielding percentage has increased dramatically," added Thibeault. "His presence provides opportunities for our players to get better each day."

Murphy amassed 184 of his 300 wins in 10 seasons at Cleveland State and was named Horizon League Coach of the Year in 2004. The Vikings posted 20-win seasons in each of the first five seasons under Murphy, and advanced to the championship game of the Horizon League Championship in both 2001 and 2004.

He also coached at George Washington University, Kent State University, Ballston Spa High School, Skidmore College and Schenectady County Community College.

Murphy graduated from Kent State University with a Master's degree in Science, Sports Administration. He received his teaching degree for Health and Physical Education in 1984 at Skidmore College, his Bachelor of Arts degree from Oswego State University and his Associate of Arts from Schenectady County Community College.

He spent his 2008 summer in China working with Major League Baseball, helping install a development program in coordination with the Chinese government and several MLB professional organizations.

Murphy is married with two sons, Tommy and Danny. He and his family reside in Cleveland Heights.
