Now in his 30th year as the Sports Information Director at John Carroll University is Christopher Wenzler. A 1990 graduate of JCU, Wenzler was named to his present post just four months after receiving his diploma, and has been a fixture in the athletic department ever since.
In August of 2008, Wenzler was given additional responsibilities when he was named the school's first Assistant Athletic Director for Communications.
When Wenzler took over the sports information office on September 15, 1990, the staff consisted of just three students and the office equipment included just one computer (An Apple Macintosh SE), a dot matrix printer, a typewriter and a phone. In his 30 years, he has built an office that now boasts over 40 student employees, a graduate assistant, and the latest in multimedia and technological equipment.
Recent years have seen Wenzler help push John Carroll athletics into the realm of multimedia opportunities. In 2006, Wenzler became one of the first sports information directors at the NCAA Division III level to implement a 40-event video webcast schedule for the internet. He was also proactive in securing a multi-sport broadcast schedule with the SportsTime Ohio network that started in the fall of 2007. In 2013, Wenzler took JCU's video streaming to the next level starting a partnership with Boxcast for the streaming of athletic events.
For his efforts throughout his career, Wenzler was elected to the JCU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2019.
Born in Seattle, Washington, on November 7, 1967, Wenzler has also called Seal Beach, CA, Glendale, MO, Maumee, OH, El Paso, TX, Allison Park, PA, Harvard, MA, and Williamsburg, VA home before settling in Northeast Ohio.
After graduating from John Carroll, Wenzler married Melissa Rettew -- a 1991 John Carroll graduate -- in 1992. The couple have two children, Madeline (23) and Oliver (19) and reside in University Heights, Ohio.
