Joey Bates '21, '23G finished his fourth year as an assistant coach with the John Carroll Football program in the 2024-25 academic year. He coached the defensive backs and the special teams.

Bates previously served as a graduate assistant for the Blue Streaks from 2021-23. 

During his second campaign as special teams coordinator, the Blue Streaks played very efficiently. John Carroll finished first in the OAC in net punting (11th in NCAA Division III) and third in the OAC in punt return average. 

In 2024, junior punter Owen Schuckert was named the OAC's first winner of the Special Teams Award. Schuckert averaged 40.21 yards per punt with 11 of 36 of his punts landing within the 20 yard line. He also boomed 7 punts 50+ yards.

Bates played three years at defensive back for the Blue Streaks, as he started at JCU, transferred to Ohio State for one semester, then return to John Carroll.

In spring of 2021, the Kirtland native tabbed 4 tackles and 1 pass breakup. In 2019, Bates registered 39 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, 1 sack, 1 fumble recovery, 2 interceptions, and 4 pass breakups. In 2018, Bates played in 8 games, tallying 18 tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss. 

Bates graduated from John Carroll in May 2021 with a Bachelor's degree in Sports Studies. In 2023, Bates acquired his Master's of Education from JCU.
