Matt Moran '04 enters his fourth season as a volunteer assistant coach with the Blue Streaks in 2025-26.
His first third seasons have seen great success for the Blue Streaks. In his first campaign, JCU won the OAC Regular Season Championship and made it to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament. In his second season, the Blue & Gold swept the OAC titles and returned to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament. In his third year, JCU repeated with the OAC sweep before making another trip to the NCAA Tournament. JCU has a 71-14 record during his tenure as an assistant.
Moran previously spent eight seasons as the head boys basketball coach at Lake Catholic. With the Cougars, Moran compiled a 110-83 record, the program's all-time winningest coach. In 2021-22, the Cougars were 11-13 and advanced to a district semifinal. He was the 2019 NCL Coach of the Year after winning the NCL Championship, and repeated in 2020. The Cougars were OHSAA Division II District Champs in 2017 and District finalists in 2015 and 2018, as well.
He's also coached at Berkshire, Parma, and Chardon. Moran served as an assistant coach at JCU during the 2005-06 season. In all, Moran has 18 years of basketball coaching experience. Moran is currently in his 15th year at Lake, where he is the Dean of Students. He's been a health/PE teacher for 18 years.
Moran played basketball at John Carroll from 2001-04. He was part of the 2003 OAC Championship squad and a captain on the 2004 Final Four team. After earning his Bachelor's degree from JCU in 2004, Moran earned his Master's in Curriculum, instruction, and assessment from Jones International University in 2008.
Matt is the younger brother of head coach Pete Moran, and the son of the legendary former head coach Mike Moran. Matt has been married to Nora '04 (nee Gibbons) for 18 years. They have five children Brady (15), Maggie (14), John (11), Maeve (8), and Bridget (7), and live in Mentor.
