The NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship came to an end for the John Carroll Blue Streaks on Saturday night, as Transylvania came out on top with a 4-3 edge in penalty kicks that were needed to decide matters in a second round match-up held at Ohio Wesleyan University's Roy Rike Field in Delaware, Ohio.
The two teams played to a scoreless tie after the regulation 90 minutes, then could not untie the knot in a pair of ten minute extra periods.
In the penalty kick round, Transylvania keeper Trey Kramer opened the shootout by saving the kick of John Carroll's Louis Kastelic, but the shootout remained tied at 0-0 when the Pioneers' Matt Karaffa hit the right post with his kick.
Kramer came back and saved the kick of John Carroll's Mike Pinter, and Austin Price gave the Pioneers the lead with a successful kick to the lower right side of the net.
John Carroll's Jeff Kosek and Transylania's Kevin Jones traded successful kicks, before the Blue Streaks' Scott McKinney tied matters at 2-2 with a successful kick. The score remained tied at 2-2 when Jabel Parayil sent his kick wide of the right post, bringing the set of five kicks down to the last round.
Alex Bernot gave John Carroll a 3-2 lead with a successful kick, but Transylvania's Ryan Dale kept the Pioneers alive by sending his kick into the lower left corner.
With the shootout now down to alternating shooters, Kramer put the Pioneers in position to advance when he saved the kick of John Carroll's Joe Ciacci.
Faced with elimination, John Carroll keeper Matt DeMarchi faced the kick of Transylvania's Ryan Wood. DeMarchi dove to his right and got a hand on the ball, which bounced off the left post and right across the goal mouth, almost going into the net on the right side.
John Carroll's Steve Rock then sent his kick wide of the left post, but once again DeMarchi guessed correctly, going to his right to save the kick of Transylvania's Matt Vogel and keeping the Blue Streaks in the match.
Kyle Buxman then sent his kick wide of the left post, and Hampson sent his kick into the lower left side of the net, moving the Pioneers into the NCAA Division III sectionals.
It was the second consecutive night the Pioneers had advanced on penalty kicks, knocking out host Ohio Wesleyan by a 6-5 count on Friday evening.
Transylvania outshot John Carroll, 12-11. Kramer had 4 saves for the Pioneers, while DeMarchi finished with 6 saves for the Blue Streaks.
