In the first home meet of the 2007-08 season for the John Carroll Blue Streaks, the final relay of the night would prove to be the deciding factor as Mount Union edged the home team by a 125-118 count.
The Purple Raiders picked up the lead on the second leg of the 200 Free Relay and never relinquished it to overcome a one-point deficit in the final race of the evening.
The Blue Streaks, who were without six-time OAC champion Heather Gilmour (fulfilling ROTC responsibilities), started the night with a strong showing in the 200-yard medley relay. The combination of Lindsay Pickut, Kristen Kovach, Kim Kern and Andrea Kovacs earned JCU 11 points with a first place finish time of 2:00.01.
JCU freshman Katie Mathews took second in the 1000-yard freestyle (11:31.61) behind Mount Union's Sarah Eckersley (11:21.09). Later in the meet she captured first with a time of 2:21.52 in the 200-yard IM and then took another second place finish (2:27.70) again behind Eckersley (2:26.48) in the 200-yard butterfly.
Heidi Benson had a big night, as she finished ahead of Mount Union's Jessica Shetler in the 200 Free and again in the 500 Free.
Also winning Friday night were Kovacs and Kristen Kovach. Kovacs took first for Carroll in the 100-yard freestyle, while Kovach's six-second win in the 200 Breast gave the Blue Streaks a one-point advantage (113-112) going into the last event.
The loss dropped John Carroll's record to 1-2 overall and 1-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference.
