Despite returning to the friendly confines of the Tony DeCarlo season for the first time in 2007-08, home was not so sweet for the John Carroll women's basketball team as the Blue Streaks fell to Washington and Jefferson, 79-64, on Wednesday night in a non-league matchup.

By making eight of the first ten shots they attempted, the Presidents raced out to a 21-8 advantage just a little more than eight minutes into the contest.

Washington & Jefferson still led by 12 points with just under four minutes to play when the Blue Streaks managed to pull off an 11-2 run to close out the half. Christine Briercheck keyed the run with four points, one offensive rebound and one assist during that stretch.

The Blue Streaks, with nine different players etching their names into the scorebook, went into halftime with the momentum, trailing by a miniscule 33-30 score.

The JCU momentum was quickly lost, however, as the Presidents came out of the gates quickly. A 22-8 Washington and Jefferson run had the Blue Streaks behind 55-38 in the second half. The big deficit proved to be insurmountable as the Blue Streaks could never narrow the gap to fewer than eleven points.

For John Carroll (2-2), junior Rachael Price was the only Blue Streak to finish in double figures with her 12-point effort. It was a struggle for John Carroll shooting this evening, as the Blue Streaks were 24-72 (.333) from the field. JCU was 18-45 (.400) inside the arc, but 6-27 (.222) from three-point range.

Washington & Jefferson (4-1) had four players in double-figures with junior Emily Hays leading the way. Hays, who was 9-15 from the field, finished with a game-high 19 points. Presidents forward Maggie Gibson chipped in a double-double with her 15 points and 10 rebounds.

As a team, Washington & Jefferson shot 34-65 (.325) from the floor. The Presidents also won the rebound battle, 50-38, although both teams managed to grab 15 caroms off the offensive glass.
