John Carroll salvaged a rough weekend at the Spartan Invitational by defeating Lake Erie in its final match to place seventh out of eight teams.

In its first match with Ohio Dominican University on Friday, John Carroll took game one with a 30-22 win. But the Blue Streaks couldn't complete a full match and fell, 27-30, 19-30, 23-20 in the first round of the tournament. Junior Meagan Gambone led the team with nine kills that game and tacked on five digs and four block assists. Sophomores Becky Blackley finished with seven kills and MaryEileen Dalton and freshman Kate Schafer each contributed with five kills.

In Friday night's second match against the host team Case Reserve, the Blue Streaks were defeated in three, 27-30, 31-33, 25-30. Gambone again led with 10 kills and teammates, Colleen Cavanagh, Dalton and Schafer each pounded in nine, but it wasn't enough for the win. Celia Mastroine had 25 digs for the Blue Streaks.

John Carroll came into Saturday's match with Notre Dame with hopes of redemption as the Blue Streaks were defeated by the Falcons just last week. A slow start in game one set the tone for the entire match as the Blue Streaks fell in three. Gambone once again led her team with 18 kills and Blackley tip in with 10 kills and 21 digs. 

In their final match and playing for seventh place in the tournament, the Blue Streaks were up against Lake Erie. Turning their momentum, John Carroll finally witnessed a victory, 30-28, 30-22, 30-21. Mastroine picked up 23 digs, Cavanagh laid down 11 kills and one solo block and Blackley finished with 10 kills, 12 digs, and one solo block.

Ending the weekend 1-3, John Carroll now has a record of 7-6. The Blue Streaks will meet Lake Erie again on Tuesday at home, game time is 7 p.m.
