from staff reports

An aggressive John Carroll squad used four pins and a major decision to post its first Ohio Athletic Conference victory of the 2007-08 season, a 37-12 triumph over Muskingum College Tuesday evening at the DeCarlo Varsity Center.

Elie Naoum (125), Dominic Spitalieri (141), Steven Bagnowski (174) and Ben Adams (184) all recorded falls, with Naoum and Adams needing less then a full period to record their pins.

JCU raced out quickly to an 18-0 lead when Naoum stuck Shawn Feistamel at the 1:22 mark of the first period. After Adam Pizzurro accepted a forfeit at 133 (marking his 80th career victory to become only the 21st JCU wrestler to reach that milestone), Dominic Spitalieri used an early second period takedown to register his pin at the 4:36 mark.

"It was unfortunate that Adam had to pick up a milestone win in that manner," said John Carroll head coach Kerry Volkmann. "Nevertheless, it puts him in an elite group. It is a credit to his persistence."

Muskingum turned the tide at 149 when Luke Caracofe scored five points in the final period to pull away from Nick Ward for a 6-2 win. The Muskies' lone senior, Dave Minner, counter a Tyler Mickley shot and would record a fall with one second remaining in the first period for his team-leading 16th win of the season.

With its lead cut in half at 18-9, Devon Jurczak would post a 15-5 major decision victory at 165, followed by a third period pin from Bagnowski at 174 to push the lead to an insurmountable 28-9 margin.

Adams improved to 18-2 with a fall at 184, marking his 16th win in the last 17 matches. Scott Marhofer scored the final JCU points of the night with a final minute takedown to edge Robert Weisenberger, 3-2, at 197 pounds.

The Muskies picked up their final three points when Brian Barnhart's third period reversal proved to be the winning points in a 3-2 win at 285 pounds.

"Coming off an extended tour with our trips to Florida and Lycoming, I was concerned that our kids would be a little road weary and that conditioning would be an issue," said Volkmann. "It was good to see that we were the aggressors tonight."

JCU improved to 5-5 with the win and moved to 1-0 in Ohio Athletic Congerence action, while Muskingum slipped to 1-8 overall and 0-3 in the OAC.
