John Carroll Rolls Over Wilmington In Season And Conference Opener

John Carroll won every race but one, and often times swept the top two places, as it rolled to a 123-73 win over Wilmington College Friday night at Johnson Nataorium.

The JCU women won the first race of the night, the 200 medley relay. The Blue Streak quartet of Samantha Mossman, Melissa Fillmore, Katie Mathews and Heather Gilmour won in 1:55.78, defeating Wilmington's effort of 1:59.86.

Heidi Benson picked up where she left off with a convincing win in the 1000 Free. The JCU sophomore won in 11:08.63, almost a full two minutes ahead of the second place finisher, Brittany Mozingo of Wilmington (13:02.60).

JCU claimed first and second in both the 200 Free and 50 Free. In the 200 race, Mathews wion in 2:05.72, while Liana Sved was next in 2:08.24.

Andrea Kovacs and Gilmour then went 1-2 in the women's 50 Free. Kovacs goes to the wall in 26.40, while Gilmour is an fingetip behind in 26.59. By the end of the 50 Free, John Carroll had already built a 50-21 advantage.

Two freshman women would take center stage for JCU in the 200 IM. Brittany Krauth won in 2:22.62, while Samantha Mossman touched second in 2:23.96.

After a break in the action, John Carroll resumed the 1-2 parade by sweeping the top two spots in the women's 100 fly. Mathews captured this race in 1:02.48, while Krauth continued a strong debut with her time of 1:03.88.

Gilmour, the two-time OAC Swimmer of the Year, claimed her first individual event win of 2008-09, placing first in the women's 100 free. Her time of 58.58 was just ahead of fellow senior Sved (59.12).

Mossman was part of a winning relay to start the night, then added an individual win in the women's 100 back. She swam a 1:04.58, with Kovacs pulling in at 1:07.52 for second place.

Benson followed her 1000 Free victory from earlier in the evening with a win the 500 Free in 5:31.12. Fillmore, yet another freshman doing well tonight, claimed second in 5:47.71. JCU will score its final points of the night, going exhibition after taking a 123-42 lead.

In the 100 breast, JCU would win the race as edged Kacie Otting, 1:11.59 to 1:11.89.

Wilmington would finally break the string of JCU victories by touching out the Blue Streaks in the final race, the 200 free relay.
