Blue Streaks Smash Yeomen To Give Head Coach Koury First Collegiate Win

A sweep of doubles followed by some clutch wins in singles delivered an 8-1 victory for the John Carroll men's tennis team in its 2008-09 season opener Tuesday over Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio.

The win also marked the first in the collegiate coaching career of Diane Koury, who took over the program in August.

Veterans James Steward and Matt Tomayko won by an 8-5 score at #1 doubles, while Ross Venzke and newcomer Michael Hulseman won by the same score at #3 doubles. Chad Reuhs and Michael Finissi were very impressive in an 8-1 drubbing at the #2 slot.

JCU also won five of the singles matches. Reuhs and Finissi had to go the distance to win at #3 and #4 singles respectively. Steward (#1), Venzke (#5) and Hulseman (#6) won in straight sets.
