Sophomore Lee Jennings scored 15 points in JCU's 74-60 loss to Capital Saturday

from staff reports

Box Score

The good news was that the John Carroll University women's basketball team scored the second-most points of any opponent this season against the vaunted defense of Capital University.

The bad news was that the Crusaders scored enough points in the first half to comfortably cruise to a 74-60 victory in the DeCarlo Varsity Center Saturday afternoon.

John Carroll went head-to-head with Capital in the five minutes of the game. Junior Laura Gruber shot a lay-up 17 seconds into regulation to put the first score on the board for either team. But the Blue Streaks would have only one other lead during the game. It would come with 15:52 remaining, after a pass from sophomore Lee Jennings to senior Caitlin Hubach gave John Carroll a two-point, 8-6 lead.

Capital would start pulling away around the 8:37 mark. The Crusaders embarked on a 17-2 run, during which time the Blue Streaks were 1-4 in field goal attempts and turned the ball over ten times.

The Blue Streaks entered the locker room down 41-19.

Play during the second half began by mirroring much of the first. JCU was able to score 20 points in the first 11 minutes of the second half, one more than they had scored during the entire first 20 minutes of play. Unfortunately for JCU, though, Capital was able to build upon its lead, several times leading by 25 points or more.

A basket by John Carroll sophomore Katie Knox and a three-point shot by classmate Ashley Mack would cut the Blue Streaks deficit to 14 at the end the game.

Capital (5-1, 3-0 OAC) was paced by the quartet of Sanna, Kristen Richardson, Heather McAlpin, and Caitlin Elsass as all four scored more than ten points for the Crusaders. Sanna led the way with 20 points on 10-12 shooting from the field, while Richardson was 7-11 for her 15 points. Capital shot 19-30 (.633) from the field int eh first half and finished 31-56 (.554) for the game.

John Carroll (4-4, 1-2 OAC), which dropped its second straight game after opening the year 4-2, was paced by 15 points and a game-high eight assists from ennings. #Gruber added ten points as the only other JCU player in double figures.

With the loss, John Carroll falls to 4-4 overall, 1-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Capital's win puts them at 5-1 overall, and they stay undefeated in the OAC, with a 3-0 record.
