For the ninth time this season in as many tries, John Carroll won the second game of a scheduled doubleheader.

If only the Blue Streaks could figure out that troublesome first game.

After dropping a 4-2 decision in the opening game, John Carroll rebounded with a 10-3 thumping of host Ohio Northern Monday afternoon to split an Ohio Athletic Conference twinbill at Wander Field in Ada, Ohio.

The Blue Streaks have been downright dominant in nightcaps. In winning all nine second games of doubleheaders so far in 2008, JCU has outscored the opposition, 70-18.

In the opener, however, John Carroll simply could not sustain any offensive rallies. In fact, it would be Ohio Northern that would make the most of its opportnities.

After two men were out in the bottom of the first, a single, a walk, and then another single aided by a throwing error would plate two runs for the Polar Bears.

JCU would answer in the second inning with two runs of its own. Matthew Pangallo led things off with a single, which was followed by an Adam Sockel single that would advance Pangallo to third. Christopher Cairo and Mike Carbo came through with a pair of one out RBI singles that knotted the score at 2-2.

Ohio Northern, however, would go ahead for good with a manufactured run. Greg Gibbons led off with a walk and then advanced to second on a sac bunt. Another ground out pushed him to third, after which Brett Katana singled him home with a two out hit.

The Polar Bears added an insurance run in the sixth off JCU starter Paul O'Donnell.

John Carroll was outhit by a slim 7-6 margin, but left five runners stranded compared to Ohio Northern's three. JCU also committed the only two errors of the game.

The Blue Streaks came alive in game two. Behind starting pitcher Tony Evanko, who pitched 5 2/3 innings of no hit ball before surrendering a two-out single in the bottom of the sixth inning, JCU would roll out to a 8-0 lead before coasting to a 10-3 win.

The big inning for JCU was the seventh, where the Blue Streaks put up five runs. Aided by two Ohio Northern errors, JCU would send 10 batters to the plate, and collected four hits, a walk, and a hit batsmen as productive at bats.

Ryan Lewis, the reigning OAC Hitter of the Week, would go 3-5 with a run, an RBI and a stolen base. Tim O'Brien, Joe Bott and Carbo each had two hits, with Carbo producing two RBI.

Evanko picthed six complete innings in improving to 5-0. He allowed just the one hit and struck out five while walking two and hitting two.
