Tricia Kuenzig's double drove home the winning runs in the marathon game one 6-4 win
Box Scores: Game 1 vs. Marietta / Game 2 vs. Marietta
It took 20 innings on Saturday afternoon, but John Carroll accomplished what it needed to do to have an opportunity to qualify for the Ohio Athletic Conference postseason tournament: The Blue Streaks swept Marietta.
But one other piece still needed to fall into place for the playoff puzzle to be completed: Capital had to lose twice to Ohio Northern.
Shortly after their marathon sweep of Marietta -- 6-4 in 12 innings in game one, and 7-5 in eight innings in game two -- the Blue Streaks received word that Capital had indeed lost twice, putting John Carroll back into the OAC playoffs for the first time since 2003.
Game one featured several momentum swings, including a Marietta single run in the bottom of the seventh that would send the game into extra innings. A two-out solo home run by Ashley Eberhardt tied the game at 2-2 after Kelly D'Amato had double home a go-ahead run with two out in the top of the seventh.
Both teams would score twice in the 11th inning. JCU plated two unearned run in the top half, only to have yet another home run -- this time a two-run shot by Erin Faulkner -- knot the score at 4-4.
Tricia Kuenzig would be the hero in the 12th, driving in the game-winning runs with a two-out two-run double.
Ashley Lippert worked five innings of relief to pick up her fifth win of the year.
For all the work JCU had done to win game one appeared to be slipping away in game two. Marietta would take a commanding 5-2 in into the final inning of regulation play.
D'Amato would start things off with a single in the top of the seventh, after which Julie Marlowe singled. Kuenzig sacrificed both runners over on a bunt, and then Jamie Smrdel walked.
Sam Thompson would drive home the first run on a walk, and then #Bethany Bachman drove home the second run on an RBI single.
Marietta would record the second out, but freshman #AngelaVistocco came through with a two-out single that scored pinch runner Jamie Colley# from third to tie the score at 5-5.
The game would move to the eighth inning, where JCU would score the game winning runs on a bases loaded two-out error that allowed Smrdel and D'Amato to come across the plate.
Lippert again picked up the win to sent John Carroll to just its second OAC Tournament in program history.
Information concerning the OAC Tournament will be made available by the conference office Sunday.
