Jamie Smrdel pounded her school-record tying 20th career home run Wednesday at Capital
Box Scores: Game 1 vs. Capital / Game 2 vs. Capital
John Carroll would have dearly loved a sweep, but will gladly take a split on the road from the Capital University Crusaders. JCU won game one, 4-1, before falling by a 2-1 score in eight innings in the nightcap in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader held at Clowson Field in Bexley, Ohio.
The first game was scoreless until the sixth inning, when JCU pushed three runs across the plate. Kelly D'Amato and Julie Marlowe scored the first tw runs on a wild pitch followed by an error. Jamie Smrdel then put an exclamation point on the inning with a solo home run, a blast which tied the JCU record for career home runs (20).
John Carroll had a 3-0 lead after the top of the sixth inning, but Capital threatened to grab it back. The Crusaders had bases loaded and one out when a base hit scored the first run. But in an attempt to score a second on the same ball, a throw from right fielder Jamie Colley reached its target and Smrdel tagged out the runner.
Capital did not threaten again, as Bethany Bachman added an insurance RBI in the top of the seventh inning to put the icing on a 4-1 win.
The second game did not feature much scoring either. JCU tallied its only run in the third on an error, as D'Amato took advantage and scored all the way from second base.
The host Crusaders tied the game with a single run in the fourth, then used a two-out base hit in the bottom of the eighth to score the game winner.
JCU is now 8-14 overall and 4-4 (5th place) in the OAC, while Capital is now 16-11 overall and 5-3 (4th place) in the conference.
