JCU Rallies With Three Goals In The Final 34 Minutes To Defeat Ohio Wesleyan

John Carroll fell behind early in the second half but exploded for three goals in the final 34 minutes to defeat Ohio Wesleyan, 3-1, in a non-conference match-up Saturday evening at Don Shula Stadium.

The two teams battled for 45 scoreless minutes in the opening half, but the Battling Bishops had the better chances, outshooting JCU by a 9-3 margin.

In the second half, Ohio Wesleyan seized upon an opportunity in the 52nd minute. After a quick throw in while the JCU defense was retreating, Matt Bonfini found a wide open Tyler Wall, and the Ohio Wesleyan freshman rifled in a shot just inside the left post for his sixth goal of the year.

Once the Battling Bishops took the 1-0 lead, John Carroll began to open things up. Their efforts were rewarded when Joe Ciacchi broke past the defense to track down a Jeff Kosek pass and banged a shot that dflected off an Ohio Wesleyan defrender to tie the match at 1-1.

The score remained 1-1 until the 72nd minute, when McKinney got into space on the right side and sent a cross that freshman Corey Rider poiuned upon and beat OWU keeper Richard Ott to the right post. It was Rider's first career goal. Click here to see video of the goal.

Ohio Wesleyan threw everything at John Carroll in the final minutes, but that would ultimately lead to JCU's final goal. With everyone forward, a deflected Battling Bishops shot was tracked down by Mike Pinter, who fed the ball to Louis Kastelic, who started a 2-on-1 breakaway. Kastelic found Kosek, and the junior forward burned a low line drive shot for the final point with 23 seconds left. Click here to see video of the goal.

This was the first time in eight meetings with Ohio Wesleyan that the match was played in University Heights. JCU is now 3-5 against the Battling Bishops -- one of the elite teams in Division III. Ohio Wesleyan has reached the NCAA Division III semifinals seven times, winning the 1998 NCAA title and finishing as national runner-up twice. Ohio Wesleyan holds NCAA Division III records with 30 playoff appearances and 49 playoff victories.

John Carroll is now 4-2 on the year, while Ohio Wesleyan is now 6-2.
