Senior Meghan O'Keefe (#22) made the start Saturday night and helped the JCU defense keep another league foe off the scoreboard
Head coach Tracy Blasius elected to start all eight members of her senior class on "senior night", and that move was one of many to spark the John Carroll women's soccer team to another shutout win -- a 2-0 blanking of Wilmington College Saturday night at Don Shula Stadium.
Box Score
The win secured a third consecutive Ohio Athletic Conference playoff berth for the Blue Streaks, who will now battle for a higher seed with one week of play remaining in the regular season.
JCU got on the board in the first half when
Aleks Quenneville (East Amherst, NY, Williamsville East) dropped a quick pass to
Lauren Marchioni (Novi, MI, Novi), who lobbed a ball over two Quaker defenders. Neither moved to cover
Rachel Grdina (Perry, OH, Perry) who had made a run toward the ball, and Grdina blasted a shot after beating the Wilmington keeper to the ball. The goal came in the 36th minute.
While the Blue Streaks had controlled possession with the wind in the first half, the Quakers would turn the tables in the second. But while Wilmington controlled the ball, the JCU defense would allow just a single shot to be taken over the final 45 minutes.
John Carroll would get much needed cushion when
Elizabeth Daigler (Chicago, IL, Mother McAuley) would make a great individual run by beating three defenders down the right sideline and then squeezing in a shot to the right side to build a 2-0 lead for the home team.
The victory, which was John Carroll's fifth shutout in seven league games, moves John Carroll's record to 6-9-2 overall and 4-2-1 in the OAC. Wilmington, which had its five-match win streak snapped in which it averaged better three goals per contest, falls to 10-4-2 and 5-2-0 in the OAC.
