Mix Of New And Old Propels Women's Swim Team To Convincing Win In Season Opener

Brittany Krauth emerged as a multiple winner in her first meet of the 2009-2010 campaign
Familiar faces and new names combined to deliver a season-opening victory for John Carroll's women's swimming & diving team Saturday afternoon at Wilmington College.

JCU rolled to a 133-72 win behind the strength of eight individual victories and a first-place relay.

Freshman Rachel Mizner (Willoughby, OH, Willoughby South) won the 800-meter Free (10:19.20) to start the victory parade. Also winning from the freshman class were Julia Adams (Erie, PA, N.W. PA Collegiate Academy) in the 100 Free (1:05.89) and Maggie Donoghue (Pittsburgh, PA, Mt. Lebanon) in the 400 Free (4:57.52).

The veterans also had a strong day, as sophomore Brittany Krauth (North Royalton, OH, Padua Franciscan) won twice in the 200 Free (2:22.11) and the 100 Back (1:13.94). Junior Heidi Benson (Strongsville, OH, Strongsville) was a first place finisher in the 200 IM (2:42.26), as was sophomore Emma Atkinson (Newtown, CT, Newtown) in the 50 Free (32.89) and sophomore Melissa Fillmore (Woodbridge, CT, Amity) in the 100 Breast (1:24.00).

John Carroll closed out the day with a triumph in the 200 Free Relay. Mizner, Krauth, Donoghue and freshman Brittany Bockanic (Hudson, OH, Hudson) teamed up to touch first in 1:59.18.
