Men's Soccer Wins Thriller Against Hiram In Come-From-Behind Fashion

Ryan Ricart is raised up by teammate Steve Rock (#6) after netting the game-tying goal Saturday night against Hiram
John Carroll trailed in the second half and was without its starting goalkeeper, yet found a way to rally for a 2-1 victory over Hiram College in the second round of the Carroll Classic Saturday night at Shula Stadium.

Box Score

Neither team was able to break through in the first half, but  it would not take long for the deadlock to be broken. JCU failed to clear the ball from its zone effectively, and Jaimie Ganner would make the Streak pay. He seized upon a ball that rolled right to him, and drilled a loe line drive just inside the left post in the 53rd minute.

Adding insult to injury, John Carroll keeper Matt DeMarchi, who appeared to be injured diving after a ball a few minutes prior, would leave the game after the Hiram goal.

Rallying behind reserve keeper Mike Telzrow, the Blue Streaks played inspired soccer over the final 37 minutes. Ryan Ricart would get JCU on the board when he took a ball bounding from 30 yards out and drove a high ball to the upper right side that surprised Terrier keeper Joe Tatum in the 62nd minute.

The score remained knotted until Tatum made a game-changing mistake. After fielding a ball near the top of the box, he inadvertently stepped outside and was charged with a hand ball. Andrew Fatigati, whokciked a game-tying penalty kick the previous night against Transylvania, answered the bell again with a free kick goal at the 85:58 mark.

JCU held off Hiram over the final four minutes to preserve the win.

John Carroll, however, did not repeat as Carroll Classic team champions, as Transylvania -- a 4-1 winner over Waynesburg earlier in the day -- won the crown thanks to a goal differential tiebreaker.

The Blue Streaks, now 3-1-1 on the season, placed Ricart, Fatigati, and Jake Milli on the all-tournament team. Hiram falls to 2-3 with the loss.
