Over the course of a swimming and diving meet, an unexpected win can do a lot to shape the final outcome.

Such was the case in Saturday's dual meet between John Carroll and host Hiram College, where Brendan Carey's triumph in the 200 Breast provided the impetus that carried the visiting Blue Streaks to a 149-138 victory.

Results

John Carroll trailed 104-77 entering event number 22, and did not appear to have the edge on paper as Carey had no seed time and Andy Petraska -- JCU's only other entrant in the race -- had the slowest of three posted seed times.

After the first 100 meters, Carey trailed Hiram's top two swimmers by two seconds. But in the third 50 meters, Carey closed the gap and pulled even, setting up a final 50 in which he swam a full two seconds faster than the rest of the field to pull away. His winning time was 2:45.04.

Carey's win set the stage for a JCU comeback. A 1-2 finish by Jimmy Ranallo and Nick Grady in the 400-meter Free and a 1-2 finish by Stanton Kochanek and Jason Reiter in 3-meter diving contributed to the Blue Streaks pulling to within two points of Hiram, 136-134, entering the final race of the day.

In the 400-meter Free Relay, the John carroll quartets swept the top two spots to secure the dual meet win. The first place foursome of Ranallo, Drew Edson, David Perchinske and Tony Russo clocked in at 3:55.70, while David Telling, Petraska, Ryan Kasunic and Ryan Tipping powered past Hiram's "A" relay by more than a full second in 4:06.81.

Although JCU fell behind, the Blue Streaks did have some early wins. Blake Pinchot had touched first in the 100-meter Back, and Kochanek placed atop the leaderboard in 1-meter diving.

John Carroll is now 6-5 following its win over the Terriers.
