Looking to bounce back from a sixth place finish at the National Catholic Invitational just days ago, the Blue Streaks took to the mats to face the crosstown rival Cleveland State University Vikings. The Vikings however, had no interest in giving an inch against the Streaks, handing them a 30-7 loss in Carroll's first home match of the season.
Leading the way for the Streaks was sophomore
Bryan Steinmetz (184 lbs) and junior
Vinny Pizzuli (157 lbs), which was eerily similar to how the Streaks fared at the NCI on Saturday as the two were the Streaks top finishers on the day.
Steinmetz, coming off a season away from the mats, looked like an animal fresh out of the cage as he relentlessly pursued Vikings sophomore Nick Anthony. Steinmetz, found the opening that he was in search of in period three as he turned a 4-2 lead into a 13-4 finish on the heels of an escape point that quickly lead to four straight take downs. One after another, Steinmetz thwarted Anthony's attempts to stay upright and closed the match in dominant fashion.
Pizzuli, finished his opponent, redshirt freshman, Koort Leyrer in a much more tamed fashion, waiting for Leyrer to let up for a split second. That moment was in the third period in which Pizzuli reversed Leyrer as if he was standing still. From that point on, Pizzuli simply needed to keep Leyrer within his grasp, which he did, ending the match 4-2.
The Blue Streaks take to the mat next Tuesday, Nov. 30th at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center as the Case Western Reserve Spartans stop by University Heights for yet another crosstown rivalry matchup at 7:00 pm.
